No. 6 Farrington All-State football

By Jerry Campany on August 2, 2014

All good teams routinely describe itself as a family. At Farrington, they have the roots to prove it. Defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko made the Star-Advertiser’s first team after last season, joining three older brothers in taking the honor and continuing a run of family excellence going back to the Nogas and the Cadientes. The run started in 2005 when the Star-Bulletin selected Whitley Fehoko for its offensive line and continued in 2006 when both papers chose Sam Fehoko on the […]

Working out with Marcus

By Paul Honda on August 1, 2014

Not everybody gets to say they worked out with Heisman Trophy candidate Marcus Mariota at practice. Ask Marcus, and he’s probably going to say he was honored to work out at his alma mater. Saint Louis had, from all reports, a stellar performance against a talented Kapolei squad on Thursday. The Hurricanes ran fairly well, while the Crusaders let the pigskin fly with regularity, to nobody’s surprise. Ryder Kuhns to Drew Kobayashi deep. We’ll likely hear that a lot this […]

Nick’s notebook: Scrimmage week

By Nick Abramo on August 1, 2014

Things learned, observed and taken in by osmosis while waltzing around various high school football training camps for a week: >> Kapolei running back Ronald Young won the best running back award at the All-Polynesian camp in Utah this summer. >> Hurricanes coach Darren Hernandez said his team could still be a factor even if it starts 0-3, which is a possibility since it opens the regular season at Kahuku, vs. Farrington at Roosevelt’s Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium, and at home […]

No. 7 Campbell All-State football

By Jerry Campany on August 1, 2014

For a school surrounded by the most football talent in the islands, Campbell’s best years seem to come in bunches. And the Sabers hope they are in the middle of one of those swings. Safety Solomon Matautia was first-team All-State last year and returns to try to repeat the feat. If he can do it, he would be just the second Campbell football player to be named to the team in successive years. The only other one was defensive lineman […]

Kahuku unveils new look under Leslie

By Paul Honda on August 1, 2014

Down the freeway at Moanalua, the Kahuku Red Raiders happy to get some contact against another team for the first time this summer. New coach Lee Leslie made his debut, far from happy about the start of the afternoon — only one of the two scheduled buses showed up at Kahuku. Players split up and eventually made it to Moanalua late. The scrimmage, which began hot with a touchdown by each team’s offense, finally began around 5:30 p.m. That was […]
