Hawaii athletes select small colleges

Lots of Hawaii high school football and soccer athletes will be signing their letters of intent to small colleges on Wednesday. Honolulu Star-Advertiser All-State football players Ronald Matautia, a linebacker from Kapolei, and Siotame Uluave, an offensive lineman from Kahuku, are two of the bigger names to choose small colleges. Te’o gives Kahuku football team $10,000

‘Manti Te’o has not forgetten where he came from. Te‘o, the San Diego Chargers star, presented a check for $10,000 to the Kahuku football team on Saturday. Manti is a class act,” Kahuku coach Lee Leslie about Te’o’s generous gift. “He is a gentleman and a solid role model.” Te’o gave $5,000 of his own money and a $5,000 match from the NFL. No appeal from ‘Iolani on Monday

‘Iolani did not appeal for an exemption to a football classification rule at the ILH’s monthly meeting, athletic director Carl Schroers said Monday. By rule, the Raiders — who have won eight state Division II titles — will be moving up to Division I next year, unless they file an appeal. Kahuku’s Fitisemanu down to 2 schools

Kahuku two-way football standout Pena Fitisemanu narrowed his choices of colleges to two, Red Raiders coach Lee Leslie said Monday. Fitisemanu will grayshirt next season and then go on a two-year church mission. The defensive lineman/running back will go to either Brigham Young or Utah. It’s likely that Fitisemanu will hold off on his final decision until Wednesday at a school assembly ceremony where Red Raider athletes will sign their letters of intent.

Uluave keeps us guessing; others ready to sign

One big-name Hawaii athlete, Punahou football guard Semisi Uluave, is still undecided on what college he will sign with and will likely keep it a surprise until Wednesday at the Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance signing ceremony at the Sheraton Waikiki. As of Jan. 2, Uluave had his choices whittled down to UCLA, Oregon and Texas Tech. Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance will host its 14th annual February National Letter of Intent signing ceremony on Wednesday at the Sheraton Waikiki Ballrooms. The event begins at 6:10 a.m. Signing will commence at 7 a.m. Student-athletes in football, boys water polo, and boys and girls soccer are welcome to participate. Daniel Matsumoto confirmed Friday that he has stepped down as Waianae’s head football coach after 15 years. “Now I’ve got to figure out what to do with my free time now,” said Matsumoto, 53. Waianae’s Matsumoto steps down

Daniel Matsumoto, who spent the last 15 years as Waianae’s head football coach, is retiring according to athletic director Glenn Tokunaga. Matsumoto went 92-70 in 15 seasons with the Seariders and guided them to a state final in 2010, losing 36-13 to a Marcus Mariota-led Saint Louis team. Matsumoto went 11-2 in his first season in 2000 but failed to win an OIA title in his tenure. The Seariders’ last OIA championship came in 1997. The Seariders were 5-4 this past season, […]
