Gerald Welch returns ‘home’ to Saint Louis

By Nick Abramo on July 12, 2016

Gerald Welch spent last season as an assistant coach to Vavae Tata for the state champion Kahuku football team. This season, he will be back home, so to speak. Welch, one of the top receivers in Hawaii high school football history, is a wide receivers coach under his former head coach Cal Lee at Saint Louis. Not bad. If you are going to take a step down from the state champions, you might as well latch on to the state […]

June Jones to instruct at Kapolei FB clinic

By Nick Abramo on July 12, 2016

Former University of Hawaii football head coach June Jones will be an instructor at a clinic on Saturday, July 16, at Kapolei High School. Jones is the new offensive coordinator for the Kapolei varsity team under Darren Hernandez. The clinic will run from 6-8 p.m., and it is geared toward every offensive position — quarterbacks, running backs, slotbacks, receivers and offensive line. Hernandez and Dennis McKnight will also be among the instructors. McKnight, a former assistant under Jones at UH and […]

ILH sets FB schedule with postseason change

By Nick Abramo on July 9, 2016

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu varsity football schedule is out. The playoff format has changed. In 2016, all four Division I teams make the playoffs instead of three. In D-II, all three teams make the playoffs instead of no playoff system. The last date listed on the schedule, Thursday, Oct. 27, is for D-I and D-II playoff games, if necessary. At first glance, it seems odd, because the postseason champions will be determined Oct. 21. Apparently, both the D-I and […]

McKnight and Manley on Kapolei FB staff

By Nick Abramo on June 30, 2016

Kapolei is the “second city” and, it seems, with social engineering at work, the masses are moving out that way. It’s not just an alternative urban center to Honolulu, it’s a magnet for young families looking for affordable housing. Look at the relative strength of the football teams out West, starting with Mililani and moving on to Campbell, Kapolei, Nanakuli and Waianae. Not a bad apple in the bunch, so to speak. Now, take a look at the public school […]
