Gerald Welch spent last season as an assistant coach to Vavae Tata for the state champion Kahuku football team.

This season, he will be back home, so to speak. Welch, one of the top receivers in Hawaii high school football history, is a wide receivers coach under his former head coach Cal Lee at Saint Louis.

Not bad. If you are going to take a step down from the state champions, you might as well latch on to the state runners-up. The Crusaders lost 39-14 in the state Division I title game.

Welch played in 37 games for the Crusaders in from 1997 through ’99 and caught 190 passes for 3,490 yards and 46 touchdowns. That 3,490 yards total was a state record until 2014, when Punahou’s Kanawai Noa (3,510) passed the mark.

Welch went on to a productive career as a receiver at the University of Hawaii under June Jones.

Welch was a home born Kahuku product too. Now the commute will get longer. Wonder if Cal is going to pick his mind. Lol. Good Luck.

Kahuku needs to hire an academic coach. What will happen to these kids after football is over? Can they trade in their football state title for a bowl of soup possibly?

Football, we actually would need a wr coach cuz we have a freshman qb coming up to varsity and hes really good at passing and scrambling too so im pretty sure we’ll be passing more this season

Kahuku Guy, thats the problem with the world today. it’s always someone else who is supposed to be responsible for making sure the kids academics are in order. Heaven forbid we ask parents/children to be responsible for this and leave coaches for… Coaching. if you want extra help for your kid many schools have tutors in study hall free, teachers are usually willing to help if asked.

Everything starts at home, the fruit don’t fall far from the tree.

Good luck Gerald…Hope it works out for you… Cal Lee is really looking for ways to beat Kahuku, but that’s my opinion.. But good luck Gerald…
