No looking back for Kahuku football team

By Nick Abramo on September 21, 2016

In Kahuku to cover the Red Raiders volleyball match Wednesday, Hawaii Prep World personnel noticed lights at Carleton Weimer Field on and the varsity football team putting some equipment away after practice. A good time to find out more about their trip to Las Vegas last weekend? Not exactly. One thing HPW did learn, however, is that the 35-7 loss on Saturday to national No. 1 Bishop Gorman is already a distant memory. Head coach Vavae Tata had left moments […]

Kahuku’s Alapa hurt against Bishop Gorman

By Nick Abramo on September 20, 2016

Kahuku’s Stennett Alapa, an offensive lineman, hurt his arm in Saturday’s 35-7 loss to Bishop Gorman on Saturday. He is expected to miss the rest of the season, Hawaii Prep World sources said. Alapa, a senior, was an integral part of the Red Raiders’ O-line. Calls to Red Raiders head coach Vavae Tata for comment were not returned. Kahuku was on an 18-game winning streak until the loss to the Gaels (4-0), the top-ranked team in the nation. Kahuku, ranked […]

Kahuku still clear No. 1 in Hawaii

By Hawaii Prep World on September 19, 2016

Kahuku’s 35-7 loss to No. 1 Bishop Gorman did absolutely nothing in the minds of voters in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10. The Red Raiders remained No. 1 in the state receiving 14 of 15 first-place votes for the fourth consecutive week. The lone non-Kahuku first-place vote remained with Saint Louis, which holds steady at No. 2 after a 35-3 win over Kamehameha at Aloha Stadium. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns against the Warriors […]

Shoeless Tua and a royal homecoming

By Paul Honda on September 19, 2016

It’s been a season of firsts for many of the No. 2 Saint Louis Crusaders. Not so much for legendary coach Cal Lee and his staff, who have been through the title tilts and won championships as coaches and/or players. For quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, displaying his acumen at clock management — running time off it or blistering opponents through hurry-up mode — isn’t a first. He is, however, becoming a master at it. It’s the kind of intangible that isn’t […]
