Raiders dumped Sabers with finesse, ruggedness

By Nick Abramo on November 12, 2016

Campbell is known as a rugged football team, but the Sabers got beat in the sturdiness department by ‘Iolani on Friday night. As a result, Campbell (7-5) is done for the season, having been vanquished by the Raiders 35-12 in the state Division I semifinals in Mililani. Sure, the Raiders (5-7) had plenty of their usual finesse, but in the trenches and in the tackling and blocking parts of the game, they stood toe to toe with the bigger opponents […]

Crusaders’ defense could close the deal

By Paul Honda on November 12, 2016

Offense has taken Saint Louis quite far. Defense by the gentlemen of Kalaepohaku could close the deal. Clearly, and abundantly, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and the offensive unit have provided ample push toward that beautiful koa trophy waiting to be taken home by this year’s state football champion. But right now, getting out of the semifinal round of the all-new, old-school-tenacious Open Division of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Championships isn’t about aerial delights alone. It takes sound defense. Consistent, physical, […]

Kahuku demolishes another in-state foe

By Billy Hull on November 11, 2016

Kahuku coach Vavae Tata‘s message to his team this week might seem a little far-fetched at first. “Score one (touchdown) every drive,” running back Elvis Vakapuna said. “Coach stressed it a lot. We needed to score one (touchdown) every drive. That was our goal for tonight.” The thing is, it’s not far-fetched. Not when you’re the No. 1 team in the state. Not when you’re the defending state champion. Not when you’re ranked No. 22 in the country by USA […]

The previous record was held by Darrien Shealy, who had 217 receving yards in 2010, also against Mililani. “The coaches always taught us to push through and fight until the end,” Phifer said. Despite […]

Mililani’s Gabriel keeps same approach

By Christian Shimabuku on November 11, 2016

In order to play beyond his years, Mililani sophomore quarterback Dillon Gabriel knows that it starts with his approach. “I play every game like it’s my senior year,” he said. “I just want to go out there and play hard for my brothers next to me.” In Friday night’s 51-35 win over Leilehua in the Division I semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships, Gabriel went 16-for-25 with 224 passing yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for […]
