By Nick Abramo on November 14, 2016

Freshman starting quarterback McKenzie Milton of Mililani and his Central Florida teammates are bowl eligible after Saturday’s 24-3 home victory over Cincinnati. The Knights (6-4) are having an amazing turnaround season under first-year head coach Scott Frost, who is a former Oregon assistant. A year ago, Central Florida went 0-12. In the win over the Bearcats, Milton went 22-for-34 for 150 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. For the season in seven games, Milton is 121-for-204 for 1,350 yards, […]

Texeira soldiered on despite horrifying loose ball

By Nick Abramo on November 13, 2016

Kapaa’s Kapena Texeira is a solider, according to Warriors football coach Philip Rapozo. So, when the Division II state football semifinal game was on the line Saturday, Texeira found himself with the ball four out of six plays on his team’s final possession. It was time to save the game, or as soldiers do, save whatever they can in the heat of battle. Rise above the fray, they say. All the Warriors (8-1) needed was to keep getting first downs […]

By Paul Honda on November 13, 2016

Much was on the line for second-seeded Konawaena: an opportunity to advance into the championship game of the Division II First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships. But a sloppy first half led to missed opportunities, and the visiting Lahainaluna Lunas pulled away after a 7-all halftime stalemate for a 28-14 victory at Julian Yates Field.

Lunas’ ground-and-pound slows speedy Kona

By Paul Honda on November 12, 2016

Lahainaluna football is about discipline. Tradition. Mental toughness. Poise. All played factors in a 28-14 win over Konawaena on Saturday night at cool Julian Yates Field. Co-head coach Garrett Tihada, however, was less than thrilled with an unusually high number of penalties. Whether it was the ground attack, which generated 295 yards on a night when the visiting Lunas didn’t complete a single pass, or a defense that was resilient against a warp-speed, hurry-up Konawaena offense, Tihada couldn’t give his […]
