By Paul Honda on July 27, 2017

Sometimes, the journey is the reward. With a busload of departures due to graduation, the Farrington Governors look like a very different team this fall. On paper. The potent offense, steady defense — both were fortified by tremendous talent and vast experience. The Govs reached the OIA Division I championship game, upsetting Kapolei along the way, before losing in the HHSAA Open Division quarterfinals. Now, Coach Randall Okimoto and his staff are rebuilding with a team of mostly first-year starters […]

By Billy Hull on July 26, 2017

Darren Johnson was perfectly content. Teaching football to little kids and taking 7-on-7 teams to mainland tournaments was enough for Johnson, a former head coach at Kailua and Kaimuki, to get his coaching fix. He had no plans to return to coaching at the high school level. But when the job at Campbell opened up and fellow coaches encouraged him to take the job, Johnson decided it was time to give it one more run. “It had to be the […]

If things go well without further delays, Waipahu’s brand-new artificial turf football field will be ready for the Marauders’ home opener on Aug. 25 against Roosevelt. “They have started the lay on the track and the contractor is trying hard to get it done,” Waipahu athletic director Stacie Nii wrote in an email to Hawaii Prep World. “Looks good as far as dates, weather permitting. We are very hopeful for Aug. 25.” Waipahu coach Bryson Carvalho is also feeling positive […]

Kaimuki coach David Tautofi told Hawaii Prep World on Wednesday afternoon that Kaiser pulled out of the scrimmage due a low number of available varsity players. Kaiser, however, is planning to participate in a three-way scrimmage Saturday against Aiea and McKinley, according to Lindsay Chambers, a spokesperson for the Department of Education. She told Hawaii Prep World on Wednesday that communication about […]
