Waianae’s Rosario expected back soon

By Nick Abramo on August 8, 2017

Rico Rosario rushed for 1,266 yards and 15 touchdowns as a Waianae junior running back last season, so many people wondered why he didn’t play in a season-opening, nonleague, 49-7 home loss to Waianae last Saturday. Rosario said Tuesday night that he did not play in the game for two reasons. One, he broke a team rule, and two, he had an elbow injury suffered in a scrimmage against Punahou. Rosario also said that his absence is temporary. He has […]

4 JV football teams bow out of games

By Nick Abramo on August 8, 2017

Four Oahu Interscholastic Association junior varsity football teams will not be playing games this week. In three out of the four cases, the reason for forfeiting the JV contests is not enough JV players on the roster to safely play a game, according to OIA football coordinator Harold Tanaka. The three schools having trouble with JV roster numbers are McKinley, Kalaheo and Waialua. The fourth school who is forfeiting a JV contest this week is Kaiser, which at last check, […]

Ole Miss became the 10th school overall to offer the 6-foot-4, 260-pound Vimahi, who opens his season Friday night at home against Leilehua. Vimahi has put together an impressive offer sheet — USC, UCLA, Oregon, Nebraska, BYU, Utah, Syracuse, Fresno State, Hawaii and now the Rebels. 247Sports lists Vimahi as the No. 112 overall player, the 14th-best offensive tackle overall and the third-best tackle in […]

Kapolei is just outside of the MaxPreps Top 150, at No. 153. The Crusaders host Narbonne (No. 67) of Los Angeles at Aloha Stadium on […]

Kaiser forfeits game against Mililani

By Nick Abramo on August 7, 2017

Kaiser’s varsity football team will not play a scheduled game for the second week in a row, according to a source close to the situation. The Cougars’ varsity and junior varsity games at Mililani on Friday night have been canceled. The results will go in the books as forfeits by Kaiser, which has been having difficulties fielding enough varsity players to safely play an Oahu Interscholastic Association game. A few weeks ago, Kaiser principal Justin Mew announced that the Cougars’ […]

D-II champ Lunas enter Star-Advertiser Top 10

By Billy Hull on August 7, 2017

After finally breaking through to win the school’s first state football title last season, defending Division II champion Lahainaluna earned the No. 9 ranking in the final Honolulu Star-Advertiser top 10 of 2016. Voters seemingly had a short memory as by the following summer, the Lunas found themselves outside of the preseason top 10. Those same voters were given a reminder on Saturday at Pearl City of just how much talent the Lunas have in a 20-7 win over the […]

St. Francis-Leilehua: What a game

By Brian McInnis on August 6, 2017

Here’s hoping the eventual sequel to St. Francis-Leilehua will come close to being as good as the original. That is a tough ask. Saturday night’s game was starved of offense for long stretches and play was downright sloppy at times, but in terms of a heart-pounding finish, you couldn’t have asked for more. Division II St. Francis, still a newcomer to the Oahu football scene, clawed into position for an improbable road upset of an OIA Division I mainstay, marching […]
