Nanakuli scores memorable first win since 2015

By Christian Shimabuku on August 13, 2017

Nanakuli would not be denied on Saturday night. Not with a 10-game losing streak that dated back to 2015 and continued last week with a 51-14 season-opening loss to Division II Waipahu at home. The Golden Hawks pulled out all the stops in Aiea and willed their way to a 12-7 victory over Na Alii, one that included four fourth-quarter stands on defense that would have squandered their lead otherwise. “That’s one of the more unique things about the kids […]

Injury forces Castle’s Smith to step in at QB

By Kyle Sakamoto on August 13, 2017

Castle’s Makana Smith proved Saturday that he’s not your typical backup quarterback. Smith came off the bench to complete 6-of-12 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for a score as Castle beat host Radford 33-28 in an OIA Division I game. Smith, a senior, entered midway through the first quarter after starter Jaylen Uyemura-Lee left the game after being sacked. Smith started the game at wide receiver. Smith completed 35 passes for 333 yards last season, […]

First OT game of the year goes Pearl City’s way

By Billy Hull on August 12, 2017

Makoa Cooper‘s absence last week in a 20-7 loss to Lahainaluna was felt by everyone on Pearl City. Defensive back Kasey Kikuyama, who filled in at running back for Cooper against the Lunas, might have been the happiest to see his good friend back on the field Saturday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium for the Chargers’ OIA Division II opener against Kalani. Kikuyama broke up a fourth-down pass in the end zone to hold Kalani scoreless on its first offensive […]

McLeod sets receiving mark in St. Francis win

By Billy Hull on August 12, 2017

Over the first four years of varsity football at St. Francis, the Saints have tried to keep it simple on offense. Establishing a downhill running game has helped St. Francis go from a 1-8 season in 2013 to a 5-3 record in ’16 in which the Saints contended for the ILH Division II crown before losing to Damien. To take that next step, which they hope happens this season, the Saints are opening things up on offense, meaning the ball […]
