Saint Louis is unanimous No. 1

By Billy Hull on August 14, 2017

The final voter to keep Saint Louis out of the top spot has finally been swayed. Wins over two teams that qualified for the state tournament last year by a combined score of 110-7 will do that as the Crusaders have opened the 2017 season looking vastly superior to the rest of the field in the state. Saint Louis earned all 10 first-place votes and is the unanimous No. 1 team in this week’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser football top 10 released […]

Hilo’s Huddleston a special talent

By Paul Honda on August 13, 2017

Kahale Huddleston has played long enough to know it’s not a one-man show. Not even after a six-touchdown afternoon at storied Eddie Hamada Field. The Hilo senior rushed for 244 yards and scored six touchdowns, brisk and elusive as the warm trade winds slipping over the natural grass field. Huddleston, whose height and weight weren’t listed in the roster, stands at roughly 6 feet and isn’t quite 190 pounds, according to Coach Kaeo Drummundo. But he was brilliantly untouchable on […]

Everywhere they go, home and away games, they ride the bus. That hasn’t stopped the Kaimuki Bulldogs from emerging as a stronger team each season under Coach David Tautofi. They made an immediate impression to the rest of the OIA Division II universe with a 63-0 shellacking of a decimated Waialua squad on Saturday night at Edward Skippa Diaz Stadium. Even with just 25 players in uniform, Kaimuki was in hurry-up mode in the first half and dictated the tempo. […]

Kapolei, Waianae wage heavyweight fight

By Nick Abramo on August 13, 2017

If defense is not your cup of tea, then you didn’t have an appreciation for the close-to-the-vest, 7-0 win by Kapolei over host Waianae on Saturday night. But, if Dick Butkus or Ronnie Lott are your kind of players, then you had a ball of fun watching this intense, early-season matchup of rivals and Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top-10 ranked teams. Train your binocolars on the line of scrimmage and watch the warriors slug it out. The fistfight was a draw. One […]

No. 1 Crusaders have long wait ahead

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 13, 2017

After watching Saint Louis complete a second straight dominant performance, Crusaders coach Cal Lee was typically reserved in his initial evaluation of a 61-0 rout of Baldwin on Saturday. “We gotta look at the film and see where we can get better,” Lee said as the Crusaders boarded the team buses at the top of the ramp leading out of Aloha Stadium’s north tunnel. Whatever issues arise in reviewing the footage, the Saint Louis coaches will have ample time to […]
