Kini’s mark lives on 44 years later

By Jerry Campany on August 24, 2017

Back when Mosi Tatupu was the latest greatest running back ever, his closest competition for the title was Ed Kini of Saint Louis. As time has gone by, though, Tatupu’s school records have been eclipsed by the likes of Ryan Tuiasoa and Wayne Taulapapa. Kini is still holding on, though, as the single-game rushing leader for Saint Louis with 283 in a 30-7 win over ‘Iolani way back in 1973. Kini’s big day is the oldest school record in Hawaii […]

Punahou offensive lineman Alama Uluave is the sixth player from Hawaii to be invited to the 2018 Polynesian Bowl. Uluave, whose announcement first came on the 6 p.m. KHON2 newscast, joins Kapolei’s Kukea Emmsley, who was selected earlier today, as the newest additions to the high school football all-star game set for Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, at Aloha Stadium. Uluave, who is 6-foot-4 and 275 pounds, has the most offers of any current uncommitted senior in Hawaii. His offer sheet […]

Kapolei’s Emmsley invited to Polynesian Bowl

By Billy Hull on August 24, 2017

The first of 26 players from Hawaii to receive invites to the 2018 Polynesian Bowl over the next 13 weeks is Kapolei senior defensive end Kukea Emmsley. Emmsley, who is 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, committed to Boise State just before the start of the season. He recovered a fumble in a 7-0 win over Waianae two weeks ago and had a sack in last week’s game against Castle that was eventually forfeited by the fifth-ranked Hurricanes for using an ineligible […]

Pupule’s ballot: Gauging the Top 10

By Paul Honda on August 23, 2017

How I voted in this week’s Star-Advertiser Football Top 10. Disclaimer: There is no perfect way to vote. It’s somewhere in the gray area between art and science, ignorance and knowledge. And the nutritional value of this ballot is on par with Pop-Tarts and whipped cream. It ain’t broccoli and spinach, for sure. 1. Saint Louis (2-0, 0-0 ILH) > The defending state champions have balance on both sides of the ball. The Achilles’ heel of recent years past was […]

No. 5 Kapolei forfeits win over Castle

By Hawaii Prep World on August 22, 2017

Kapolei High School released a statement Tuesday night acknowledging that the Hurricanes will forfeit last Saturday’s 41-7 win over Castle. “A miscommunication occurred regarding the dates and amount of football games ARS student-athletes were prohibited to participate in, per league rules. “The ARS student-athletes were disallowed from competing in the first two games (Campbell and Waianae), then we grade checked for the first two weeks of school as we do every year, and everyone on ARS passed their grade check […]

The 2018 Polynesian Bowl has already put together a roster of 90 seniors for the annual high school football all-star game on Saturday, Jan. 20, at Aloha Stadium. Four players from Hawaii — Waianae LB Kana’i Mauga, Kahuku DE Samson Reed, Kapolei LB Rocky Savea and ‘Iolani WR Justin Genovia — have been invited to the game. Of the 90 players, nine are 5-star recruits, including quarterback Justin Fields of Harrison, Ga., who is the No. 1 overall recruit for 2018 according […]

Nerdpod: A look back at 2016’s top QBs

By Paul Honda on August 22, 2017

NERDPOD: Quarterbacks v4.0 (2016) The new season is here. The curtain has just risen and there’s no point in drawing much of a conclusion out of any individual statistics. Then again, keeping tabs week by week will always help somewhat when it comes to postseason (All-State) ballots, at least for mine. Nerdpod isn’t about valuing individual numbers ahead of team success, absolutely not. It’s about a point of view, a perspective from the statistical base, and this applies to the […]

No JV football again for Waialua

By Nick Abramo on August 22, 2017

The most recent football schedule issued by the Oahu Interscholastic Association shows that Waialua will not play any JV football games this year. Bulldogs athletic director Bryce Kaneshiro confirmed that Monday. “It’s been a recurring problem,” said Kaneshiro, who added that Waialua hasn’t had a JV team since 2013. “Kids show interest at signups and that gives us hope,” he said. “Then in the summer that interest starts to wane and some kids decide not to play.” About 35 players […]
