1978 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on January 20, 2018

The 1978 Prep Bowl saw Waianae quarterback Michael Beazley throw a touchdown pass on one of only two completed passes in the entire game to lead the Seariders to a 14-6 win over Kamehameha. That wasn’t an indication of how voting for the All-State teams by both newspapers went, however. Saint Louis’ Wayne Apuna was the player of the year from both newspapers and teammate Paul Goo, a quarterback, was the back of the year. Apuna was dominant on both […]

The Honolulu Advertiser shared offensive player of the year honors between Funaki and running back Mulivai Pula. Pula scored on […]

Tagovailoa was quickly trending nationwide on Twitter and many of Hawaii’s up-and-coming football players were quick to send their praise. Punahou senior Alama Uluave decided to have some fun with […]

By Nick Abramo on January 18, 2018

Kahuku announced the hiring of Sterling Carvalho as its head varsity football coach today. Carvalho had coached the junior varsity team for the past three seasons. He replaces interim coach Makoa Freitas, who went 11-2 this past season, won an OIA title, and advanced to the state title game in the Open Division. Carvalho, a Kauai High graduate and former quarterback, is a former assistant under previous Kahuku head coach Reggie Torres. He was a finalist along with Freitas, who […]

2010 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on January 17, 2018

The year 2010 was the first prep football season after the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin newspapers merged in June. With Kahuku forced to forfeit all of its games due to the use of an ineligible player and unable to compete in the state tournament, that made things pretty easy for ILH champion Saint Louis, which rolled to a state title and swept the top awards. Quarterback Marcus Mariota was the offensive player of the year and defensive lineman Juda […]

Fun and fundamentals at Poly Bowl practice

By Nick Abramo on January 16, 2018

A football All-Star game in Hawaii is a pretty good way to end your high school career. Whether you’re a player from here or from the mainland, what’s not fun about that? They get to put on the pads — in January — and do what they absolutely love to do but mostly only in the fall months. On Tuesday at Kamehameha’s Kunuiakea Stadium, however, Super Bowl-winning coach Dick Vermeil reminded the All-Star players who are moving on to play […]
