PREPPING for 2018: Kapolei Hurricanes

By Nick Abramo on August 15, 2018

20TH IN A SERIES In sports, you win some and you lose some, and that’s how 2018 has started for Kapolei. After a convincing 53-7 victory over Castle, the Hurricanes lost a physical, defensive, 21-7 defensive battle against Kamehameha last Saturday. The win some, lose some scenario plays out at a different level, too. The past two seasons, Kapolei has lost more than a handful of kids to other schools. “We have to get better as a program retaining our […]

PREPPING for 2018: Kalani Falcons

By Nick Abramo on August 15, 2018

19TH IN A SERIES It’s something high school coaches have been going through since football was invented. The cycle. Every three or four years or so, you have a bunch of seniors and somehow the ship sails smoothly. And then, the seniors graduate and you find some rough seas. It appears that such is the case for the Kalani Falcons this year. They’ve dropped their first two games — 63-0 to ‘Iolani and 49-0 to Kaimuki. The second one is […]

By Nick Abramo on August 15, 2018

That fall back to Earth came quick for Waipahu. The Marauders, who opened the season with a 34-13 upset of Waianae, got stomped by ‘Iolani 55-14 on Saturday. They had it coming, in a way. A game that was originally scheduled for home was switched to ‘Iolani. It was also at 3 p.m. in the blazing heat. “In hindight, maybe we should have had some 3 o’clock practices during the summer,” Waipahu coach Bryson Carvalho said. “I don’t know how […]

OIA not counting ILH games brings strategy into question

By Paul Honda on August 15, 2018

Back in June, the exact details of the OIA-ILH alliance began to take root. The concept of reuniting the two leagues for football had been around since the breakup in 1970. So, this fall, the leagues returned to an integrated regular-season schedule for the first time in nearly five decades. But there is one catch: while the Interscholastic League of Honolulu counts games against Oahu Interscholastic Association teams in its standings, the OIA does not. The pilot-program approach by the […]

By Paul Honda on August 14, 2018

Punahou’s defense had the edge for some time, but Kahuku’s offensive line eventually made adjustments and helped lead the Red Raiders to a 41-28 win over the No. 4 Buffanblu on Saturday. Four of the five O-line starters chatted after the game: left tackle Enokk Vimahi, center Trycen Mau, right guard Marcus Lombard and right tackle Micah Soliai Howlett. (Missing: left guard Bryce Beatty.)

Pupule: Raiders, Monarchs deserve Top 10 spots

By Paul Honda on August 13, 2018

Here’s a look at this voter’s Top 10 football ballot for the Star-Advertiser rankings that were released today. Pupule football ballot Monday, Aug. 13, 2018 I’m adding sumo-style rank status to my ballot summaries. Why? Sometimes numbers are deceiving. And sub-groups say a little more than flat-out numerical order. 1. Saint Louis (1-0, 1-0 ILH Open Division) The Crusaders may not be completely satisfied with the 69-6 win over Waianae, but they were supreme in all three phases. Quarterback Jayden […]

‘Iolani debuts, Campbell moves up in Top 10

By Billy Hull on August 13, 2018

The Waipahu Marauders have been on both ends of the most surprising scores of the 2018 season so far. After making waves with a 21-point win over Waianae to open the season, the Marauders went in to Kozuki Stadium on Saturday for the Father Bray Classic and were blasted by the host ‘Iolani Raiders in a 55-14 drubbing that knocked Waipahu out of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 this week. The Raiders, who last appeared in the rankings at […]
