Kahuku’s QB competition keeps going every day

By Paul Honda on September 27, 2018

The Kahuku Red Raiders are playing, as always, for a championship. Kahuku is ranked No. 2 in the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10. The Red Raiders are 4-1 overall, and just 1-0 in OIA Open play. Wins over Punahou and Kamehameha, and a loss to No. 1 Saint Louis — all ILH Open teams — do not count in OIA standings. Kahuku hosts No. 4 Mililani, which is 3-0 in OIA Open play, on Saturday. That will be followed by road […]

Q&A: Mililani football coach Rod York

By Paul Honda on September 26, 2018

Rod York is as hungry as ever as a coach. York simply loves to build. He and his staff lifted Mililani into a state-championship program (twice). To improve the team’s future, he and his staff started the Mill Vill JPS program for middle-school players. His players arrive at the high school with a grasp of the terminology, fundamentals and expectations. They have a certain level of freedom within the intricate system of the Trojans, but discipline is meted out when […]

VIDEO: Highlights of No. 4 Mililani’s 35-0 win over Waianae

By Paul Honda on September 25, 2018

Here’s a look at the highlights of the Waianae-Mililani game. Waianae’s defense was stellar in the first half, stopping the No. 4 Trojans twice inside the 10-yard line. It was 7-0, Mililani, at the half. Then the Trojan offense went into another gear and quarterback Dillon Gabriel went into record-breaking mode. He completed 18 of 19 attempts at one point and finished with 362 yards and five TDs through the air. That was enough for the senior to surpass Tua […]

Q&A: Mililani’s record-breaking QB, Dillon Gabriel

By Paul Honda on September 25, 2018

The Mililani Trojans are unbeaten in OIA Open Division play, and Dillon Gabriel would be perfectly fine if he hadn’t broken a record along the way. Gabriel is the new all-time career passing yards leader after a 362-yard, five-TD performance against Waianae. His game-day routine is basic and rich with family time. On a warm Saturday morning, the routine of game day begins. Gabriel wakes up around 7 a.m. He goes to church before breakfast. Mom (Dori) makes a spinach […]

Lahainaluna earns highest SA ranking

By Billy Hull on September 24, 2018

For at least a week, Lahainaluna will have to share its No. 6 ranking. Still, the jump into a tie with Kamehameha for the sixth spot represents the Lunas’ highest-ranking ever in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10. The Lunas beat Baldwin 34-7 and made up two votes against the Warriors to tie for the sixth spot. Kamehameha, which has been No. 6 the entire season, knocked off Farrington with a 32-21 win on homecoming at Kunuiakea Stadium on Friday. […]

Saint Louis suffers big drop in USA Today 25

By Billy Hull on September 24, 2018

Back-to-back wins by less than 10 points, including a 30-22 victory over an unranked Kapolei team in the state of Hawaii on Friday, has caused Saint Louis to plummet in the USA Today Super 25 released today. The Crusaders, winners of 20 consecutive games, dropped all the way down to No. 17 in the poll. Saint Louis dropped just one spot in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 to No. 11. Six undefeated teams jumped ahead of Saint Louis, including Pickering Central […]

Castle a win away from D-I playoff berth

By Billy Hull on September 23, 2018

Three weeks ago, the Castle Knights were winless and dealing with a video that had surfaced on social media showing players running full sprint at each other from 20 yards away putting vicious hits on their teammates. Second-year coach John Hao referred all media inquiries on the matter to the Department of Education, but it was the lowest point of the season for a Castle team that was 0-4 for the first time since 2012. Just a short time later […]
