Kamehameha linebacker added to Polynesian Bowl

By Billy Hull on October 18, 2018

Kamehameha linebacker Hoku Arias, a 6-foot, 205-pound linebacker who is a candidate for the Star-Advertiser’s All-State defensive player of the year award, has been named a Polynesian Bowl All Star today. The leader in the middle of Kamehameha’s defense, Arias made his presence known from the opening game of the season, when he had three sacks in a win over Kapolei. He’s got seven total sacks for the season and has also blocked a punt and forced two fumbles, including […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Kailua Surfriders

By Jerry Campany on October 18, 2018

After turning an 0-7 team around in his second year, Kailua coach Joseph Wong has another reclamation project in the works. The Kailua Surfriders were the state’s hard-luck team in 2018, hanging around in plenty of games but getting off to an 0-5 start before rebounding. Scoring points was a big problem, as the Surfriders averaged only 11.7 to drop from their 18.4 the previous year. That’s the lowest total since Wong’s winless 2014 season. The defense was much better […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Nanakuli Golden Hawks

By Jerry Campany on October 17, 2018

The Nanakuli Golden Hawks had their second winless season in three years and came into this season 1-15 in the previous two years, but the small country school was placed in Division I in the new three-tier alliance. It hasn’t worked out for the proud fan base in the valley, as Nanakuli went 0-10 for the second time in program history and hit a low with one victory in three years. Nanakuli averaged 8.3 points per game, its lowest output […]

Molokai to Hana commute is a beaut

By Nick Abramo on October 17, 2018

Molokai is sitting pretty in the MIL 8-man football race, having clinched at least a share of the championship. The Farmers (6-1, 5-1) did that with a 51-40 home victory over Lanai on Oct. 6. This latest title comes on the heels of three undisputed titles in a row from 2015 to 2017. But it ain’t easy being the road team, and it is a little harder for Molokai than it is for Lanai, since the latter is closer to […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Damien Monarchs

By Jerry Campany on October 17, 2018

The only difference between the 2017 and 2018 Damien Monarchs football teams appears to be the fewer number of victories. The Monarchs generated three fewer points per game and allowed nearly the same amount of points as a year ago, but the effort turned from 10 wins last year to five this season. Damien averaged 20 points per game but that number has dropped a little bit in each of the last three years. The defense had a hand in […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Kalaheo Mustangs

By Jerry Campany on October 16, 2018

The Kalaheo Mustangs turned in their pads early, but in many ways 2018 marked another season of improvement. The Mustangs earned three wins for the first time since Darrell Poole‘s inaugural season in 2012 and have upped their win total for three years in a row, the first time that has happened since 2006-2008 under Chris Mellor, capped by Kalaheo’s last really good team that started 6-0 and finished 7-3 following back-to-back losses to Campbell. Poole’s 2018 bunch scored only […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Kalani Falcons

By Jerry Campany on October 16, 2018

Scott Melemai‘s Kalani Falcons took a step back in 2018, failing to win more than two games for the first time since 2010 under longtime mentor Greg Taguchi. The Falcons struggled mightily to put points on the board, averaging only 5.3 per game after raising that number to 26.3 last season. They were shut out six times, the most since the dark days of 2001, and it was the first time since 2007 the Falcons failed to average at least […]

Lahainaluna is third team to qualify for states

By Nick Abramo on October 16, 2018

No. 6 Lahainaluna clinched the MIL Division II football championship with a 47-0 victory over Kamehameha-Maui on Friday. The Lunas qualified for the D-II state tournament, where they will be the two-time defending champs. Lahainaluna (8-0, 7-0) won the league’s first and second rounds, so no playoff was necessary. They join St. Francis (9-0, 8-0) of the ILH at states in D-II. No. 10 ‘Iolani is the only other team in Hawaii high school team to have qualified for the […]
