CLOSING THE BOOK: McKinley Tigers

By Jerry Campany on October 15, 2018

Pat Silva‘s 2018 McKinley Tigers are living proof that turning a program around doesn’t ever come easy. The Tigers won three games this year, tripling the number they won in the previous four years combined and the most in a season since Joe Cho‘s crew won five in 2013. That includes a scheduled season finale against Kaiser that was canceled because of rain. Silva’s offense and defense would still not register as good or even average, but the Tigers did enough […]

3 OIA teams battling for final Open berth

By Nick Abramo on October 15, 2018

The OIA Open Division football playoff scenario is down to a three-team race for the final spot. No. 3 Mililani (7-2, 5-0), No. 4 Campbell (6-3, 3-1) and No. 5 Kahuku (5-3, 2-2) have already clinched three of the four OIA Open Division playoff berths. Kapolei (3-6, 1-3), Waianae (1-7, 1-3), and Farrington (2-8 1-4) all still have a chance at joining them in the postseason. The Hurricanes’ task is difficult — a trip to the North Shore to face […]

Moanalua takes No. 7 ranking into OIA playoffs

By Billy Hull on October 15, 2018

Undefeated OIA Division I regular-season champion Moanalua moves past Kamehameha to No. 7 in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 released today. Na Menehune (8-0 overall) are averaging 36.7 points per game while allowing just 12.9 entering Saturday’s OIA semifinal game against Castle at John Kauinana Stadium. Moanalua quarterback Nick Au celebrated senior day on Saturday with a career-high seven touchdown passes and moved into second place on Oahu in passing yards behind Mililani’s Dillon Gabriel. The No. 7 […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Waialua Bulldogs

By Jerry Campany on October 15, 2018

The Waialua Bulldogs have not hit a historical low just yet, going 0-9 this season after an 0-8 year in 2017. The Bulldogs have lost 18 in a row since winning the OIA Division II in a thrilling one-point win over Waipahu in 2016. The losing streak still has seven games to go to match the 25 in a row from 1996-98 under Harold Tavares and George Watanabe. It took Chico Cappello four years to dig out of the hole. […]

Kalaheo’s Poole hopeful for history-making 2019

By Christian Shimabuku on October 14, 2018

Kalaheo still felt that it had plenty to play for despite being eliminated from OIA playoff contention prior to Saturday night’s matchup with Kalani. Despite ending up just a game behind Kaiser for the fourth and final playoff bid in Division II, the Mustangs sent their 10 seniors out winners with a 22-7 victory over Kalani at Kailua’s Alex Kane Stadium. Two close key losses for Kalaheo (3-7 overall) would have swung its postseason fate. A 28-12 loss to the […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Pac-Five Wolfpack

By Jerry Campany on October 14, 2018

Pac-Five finished its season with a 3-5 record after beating Waialua, 14-6, in its final game of 2018 on Friday at Aiea. The Wolfpack put together a modest winning streak when they got off to a 2-1 start. Their win total doesn’t sound like much but it is the team’s most since 2015, when the current class of seniors were freshmen. The two-win improvement is Pac-Five’s biggest from one year to the next since 2010-11. The team gave as good […]

Did you hear? Say and Look go head to head

By Nick Abramo on October 14, 2018

There’s something endearing about the two coaching Wendells in Hawaii high school football. They’ve been around for a long while and are among the most respected guys in the coaching fraternity here. Their teams hardly ever play against each other, but they did Friday night. We’re talking about Wendell Look of ‘Iolani and Wendell Say of Aiea, who took their teams out onto Na Alii’s rainy, puddled field for a regular-season finale. And, despite the 30-3 final score, it was […]

Damien set up well for 2019

By Brian McInnis on October 13, 2018

It’s not too often that you have a winning season, win your final game … and pack it up for the year without a trophy to show for it. Yet that was the case for Damien on Saturday night. The Monarchs traveled to Castle and defeated the OIA playoff-bound Knights 26-10 behind a breakout game from running back Logan Lauti, then celebrated a 5-4 year (5-3 ILH Division I) with family and supporters on their way to the team bus […]
