The rematch between fifth-ranked Kahuku and fourth-ranked Campbell turned out much differently in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Open Division semifinals. Waipahu adds to the trophy case

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 27, 2018

Three weeks removed from dropping a second straight loss, Waipahu raised an OIA championship plaque for the second consecutive year. The Marauders broke out to a 5-2 start this season and were 4-0 against OIA Division I competition before stumbling to a 50-20 home loss to Leilehua, followed by a 29-5 drubbing by Moanalua at Aloha Stadium on Oct. 5. Inspired Red Raiders get payback in Ewa Beach

By Paul Honda on October 27, 2018

Four sacks. Two pick-sixes. No. 5 Kahuku’s 27-7 win over No. 4 Campbell, on the same field where the Red Raiders lost three weeks earlier, had all the makings of a traditionally dominant defense making an elite-level comeback. It was, at the prep level, the rough equivalent of the Baltimore Ravens putting a muzzle on the New Orleans Saints. “Our athletes are coming around, you know. They’re making plays. That’s what the heartbeat of our team is, our defense right […]

Hee steps up for Roosevelt defense

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 26, 2018

Marcus Hee’s role in two takeaways on Friday doubled as a means of giving back. With Roosevelt trailing Kaimuki in the fourth quarter of Friday’s OIA Division II championship game, the Rough Rider defensive back forced a fumble that teammate Isaac Kaleikau returned for the go-ahead touchdown. Hee later returned an interception 75 yards for a score to seal a 28-18 win and Roosevelt’s first title since claiming three consecutive ILH crowns from 1955 to ’57. Roosevelt celebrates a 28-18 […]

Kaimuki hopes to regroup after disappointing loss

By Christian Shimabuku on October 26, 2018

After shaking hands with Roosevelt in a hard fought OIA Division II title game, Kaimuki’s players walked toward the north exit of Aloha Stadium in visible disappointment, wondering what could have been. A 28-18 loss to the Rough Riders stripped the Bulldogs of what would have been the program’s third OIA title and first since 2007. Instead, it was Roosevelt that stuck around for an extended celebration after winning its first ever OIA crown. Not all is lost for the […]

ILH denies St. Francis’ appeal of forfeited games

By Nick Abramo on October 26, 2018

The ILH denied St. Francis’ appeal to overturn its decision to forfeit all of its football games in Division II this season due to the use of an ineligible player. On the field, the Saints finished the regular season 9-0 overall and 8-0 in ILH Division II. They were on the verge of playing in the state tournament for the first time in school history before last Friday’s announcement that they had used an ineligible player. Pac-Five will now represent […]
