Mililani, Kahuku continue OIA dominance

By Jerry Campany on November 2, 2018

For the 11th consecutive season, and 15th time in the last 16 years, the OIA top-tier football championship will go to either Kahuku or Mililani. If last year’s tussle is any indication, the game might go down to the wire. If it does, it will be a rarity. The big game in the public schools had been largely decided in blowouts since 2010, with the closest margin of victory being 13 twice before last year’s 35-31 Kahuku victory. Before that, […]

Kahuku’s Emerson selected to Polynesian Bowl

By Billy Hull on November 1, 2018

Kahuku safety Nalu Emerson, who has also played linebacker this season, has been selected a Polynesian Bowl All Star. Emerson, who is 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds, holds D-I scholarship offers from Navy, Hawaii and UNLV. Emerson is the fifth Kahuku player selected to the game, joining LB Miki Ah You (injured), OL Enokk Vimahi, TE Ethan Erickson and DE Tausili Fiatoa. The 2019 Polynesian Bowl will take place Saturday, Jan. 19. A total of 24 players currently at Hawaii high […]

Mililani LB Muasau selected to Polynesian Bowl

By Billy Hull on November 1, 2018

Mililani senior Darius Muasau has been selected a Polynesian Bowl All Star. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound linebacker, who has committed to the University of Hawaii, is the second Trojan selected to the 2019 high school football all-star game, joining quarterback Dillon Gabriel. Muasau has anchored a Trojans defense that is allowing just 15.1 points per game against Hawaii opponents overall and only 8.4 points per game against seven OIA opponents. Mililani has won five in a row since back-to-back losses to […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Punahou Buffanblu

By Jerry Campany on November 1, 2018

The new Open Division was supposed to bring teams like the Punahou Buffanblu back to the pack in the standings, but it didn’t quite work out that way. The Buffanblu finished 7-3 with two of their losses coming to ILH rival Saint Louis and the numbers suggest that the program was worlds better than the previous year despite what was supposed to be a tougher schedule. Punahou averaged 35.4 points per game in 2018, a jump of eight points over […]

Crusaders LB Botelho is a go for state tourney

By Paul Honda on October 31, 2018

After a few days of concern, Saint Louis has learned that linebacker Jordan Botelho is eligible to play in the upcoming First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships. A source in the football program confirmed the news on Wednesday afternoon. Botelho drew two unsportsmanlike conduct infractions during the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Open Division championship game on Saturday and was disqualified from the game in the second quarter. The Crusaders weren’t certain if HHSAA rules would permit the playmaking defensive stopper […]

Pupule ballot: The case for Waipahu at No. 7 (or No. 8)

By Paul Honda on October 31, 2018

The rankings are out. I haven’t looked. I’m already mind-blown by the final girls volleyball Top 10 of the season. I’ll just offer my football ballot and if you readers disagree, fantastic. If not, please counter with your Top 10 because, as you know, all this has the sustenance of whipped cream. Sometimes, all the fun, too, if we can discuss and disagree. OK, I’ll include the new Top 10 rankings in these summaries. (* Also included is a post-proofed-by-my-editor […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Castle Knights

By Jerry Campany on October 30, 2018

John Hao‘s second season with the Castle Knights will be remembered for a long time despite an overall losing record of 5-7. Castle improved its win total in Hao’s secong go-round, but that shouldn’t be so surprising as every Castle coach since Al Miyamoto in 1953 turned out a better product in his season season than his first. Castle’s resurgence came on offense, where the Knights scored 21.6 points per game to match Nelson Maeda‘s last crew two years ago […]

Pac-Five in states for its biggest game since ’85

By Nick Abramo on October 30, 2018

Pac-Five is in the state tournament for the first time and playing its most meaningful postseason game since the program’s second Oahu Prep Bowl championship in 1985. Last week, the Wolfpack (4-4) went through some conditioning and are in pads this week. They thought their season was done after a 14-6 regular-season victory over Waialua at the Aiea High field on Oct. 12, but catapulted into the Division II state tournament when St. Francis was removed last week for having […]
