By Nick Abramo on March 1, 2019

Officials love it. Chris Chun, the Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive director, is all for it. The National Federation of State High School Associations voted to approve instant replay as a tool for football officials to use. “We put in a proposal to use video replay at our state championship tournament for televised games,” Chun said. “The NFHS said to use it how we see fit. They approved it in January for use by all state associations.” In order […]

By Nick Abramo on February 28, 2019

Campbell football coach Darren Johnson‘s team lost in the quarterfinals of the Pylon 7-on-7 National Championship Series Las Vegas in Mesquite, Nev., last weekend. But he came home raving about how well all of Hawaii’s teams did in all age divisions. More than 100 teams participated in the tournament. In the high school division, another Hawaii team, Tagiamanu — coached by former Oregon and University of Hawaii running back Tupu Alualu — defeated Johnson’s Beast 808 team in the quarters. […]

By Nick Abramo on February 26, 2019

Up, up, up — and a little down. Sources: Fred Salanoa returns to coach Radford football

By Nick Abramo on February 11, 2019

Fred Salanoa is back as the football coach at Radford, according to three sources. The school has not made an announcement, and efforts to reach Radford athletic director Kelly Sur and Salanoa for confirmation have been unsuccessful. Salanoa, a former Radford and Eastern Washington quarterback, coached the Rams to the Division II state title in 2015. After that he was an assistant at three stops in the last three years — Eastern Washington, Punahou and Kamehameha. In his 13 seasons […]

By Nick Abramo on February 11, 2019

Due to St. Francis’ decision to close Grades 7-12, there are 22 Saints varsity football players in grades 10 and 11 who are looking for a new high school to go to and play next season. That number doesn’t include intermediate players in grades 8-9 from last fall who will be eligible to play varsity this fall. Jonan Aina-Chaves, the Saints’ star running back, is undecided on where he wants to go. He has options. According to ILH, HHSAA and […]

Q&A: Catching up with Saint Louis football coach Cal Lee

By Paul Honda on January 23, 2019

The announcement about St. Francis closing its high school (and middle school) doors at the end of the academic year has a far-reaching ripple effect. Several private schools informed the students of St. Francis about application fees that will be waived, and more. Cal Lee, coach of three-time defending Open Division state football champion Saint Louis, would seem to be a possible option for St. Francis standouts Faaope Laloulu, Bubbah Aina-Chaves and Shepherd Kekahuna, among others including public schools. Tuition […]
