The head coach of Team 808 Elite squad took his team from the islands to Tampa Bay, Fla., and took third place out of 32 teams at the Adidas 7-on-7 National Championships. Nanakuli is moving down from OIA-ILH Division I to D-II for football, league football coordinator Harold Tanaka said Thursday. There were reports of Kaimuki moving up from D-II to D-I, but that is not the case, Tanaka confirmed. Last year, there were 10 teams in both the OIA-ILH D-I and D-II. Hawaii high school football players can participate in a football combine on Maui next month, according to Rob Paulele, one of the organizers. It’s called the Hawaii Gridiron Classic and participants will have their skills assessed and measurables scored and the information will be shared with potential college recruiters. A team from Canada is coming to Hawaii to play against Damien in football this fall, according to Monarchs coach Eddie Klaneski. Damien, a Division II team, has also scheduled a game against three-time defending Division II state champion Lahainaluna. The Canada team that will visit is from St. Thomas More Collegiate in Burnaby, B.C. Konawaena football coach Brad Uemoto isn’t backing down from the big boys. Uemoto scheduled his Wildcats to play a home-and-home against Mission Viejo of California this fall on the Big Island and then in 2020 in California.
