A mixed bag for neighbor island schools to open the prep football season

By Paul Honda on August 6, 2019

There are many ways to gauge a team from start to finish. For neighbor island football programs, it is a long, long way from Point A to Point B. For a defending three-time Division II state champion like Lahainaluna, Week 0 was a mixed bag, losing at home to a D-I contender in the ILH (Damien) in overtime. At the other end of the spectrum, Molokai’s first game in 11-man football since the 1960s was difficult, yet promising despite a […]

GLORY DAYS: Coach Rod York and the 2019 Mililani Trojans

By Nick Abramo on August 6, 2019

28th IN A SERIES This summer, head coaches from all 28 Oahu high school varsity football teams were to recount their football playing days. One coach interviewed for this multi-part series pointed out what he thinks may be the value of this endeavor: “A lot of times, you only hear about coaches when they’re getting released or are having a special season. It’s super hard to have a special season, so this should shed more light on them as people […]

By Nick Abramo on August 5, 2019

During the last week of July, the fourth-ranked Mililani Trojans football team flew to American Samoa to face Fagaitua and Tafuna in scrimmages, and more importantly, got to experience first-hand what life is like in a distant land. “It was an eye-opener and a big wake-up call to see what they deal with every day and the disadvantages they live with compared to our Mililani kids,” Trojans coach Rod York said. “The trip was great for our team because our […]

By Billy Hull on August 5, 2019

Ranked teams went 2-2 on the opening weekend of the prep football season, causing a major shakeup at the bottom of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 released today. Waianae, which beat defending Division I state champion Waipahu, made the biggest jump into the Top 10 checking in at No. 7. The Seariders hadn’t been ranked since losing to the Marauders to open the 2018 season. Leilehua, which shut out Farrington 35-0 and looked smooth in doing so, is at […]

Kalani rolls the dice moving QB Nicholas Sakamoto to linebacker

By Billy Hull on August 4, 2019

It’s quite a luxury for a high school football coach to have an experienced returning starting quarterback. Kalani’s Scott Melemai has that in senior Nicholas Sakamoto, who took every snap behind center for the Falcons last season. After an 0-5 start, Kalani won three of its final five games with Sakamoto accounting for all but one of the Falcons’ touchdowns the entire season. He was also the team’s leading rusher with nearly more than 100 yards more than Kalani’s top […]

Wyatt Nahale’s first victory for Kealakehe comes on Oahu turf

By Nick Abramo on August 3, 2019

Wyatt Nahale‘s first game as the Kealakehe head coach could very well have ended in a disaster. But the Waveriders players dug deep and preserved a 13-7 victory over Pearl City at the Chargers’ home field on Saturday night. “We found a way to make it work,” Nahale said with the win in hand and the ability to go back home to the Big Island with that pleasant feeling that comes with it. “In the end, it pretty much came […]
