ON THIS DATE IN 1973: Vincent Passas takes to the air to beat Punahou

With the state tuned in to see two of Hawaii’s all-time great running backs on this date in 1973, Saint Louis quarterback Vince Passas took matters into his own hands. Passas threw for 178 yards on 11 completions to lead the Crusaders to a 30-0 win in front of 9,087 fans at Honolulu Stadium for the rare televised game. ON THIS DATE IN 1985: Kalani Hallums leads Waianae to Leeward crown

On this date in 1985, Kalani Hallums hooked up with Bryant Moananu twice to lead Waianae over Waipahu 14-6. The victory in front of 6,083 at Aloha Stadium gave Waianae its tenth Leeward district crown in 11 years. Hallums led the Seariders 64 yards on 10 plays on their second drive of the game, completing all three of his passes. Kahuku begins process of mascot change

Kahuku High and Intermediate School administration will change the school’s mascot after more than seven decades of being the Red Raiders, according to a letter written by Kahuku principal Donna Lindsey. Lindsey will start exploring a new identity for the school after the Hawaii State Department of Education’s Civil Rights Compliance Branch received complaints that the moniker “Red Raiders” and the use of the tomahawk chop by fans are disrespectful and potentially discriminatory to Native Americans. Damien hires former MPI all-leaguer Skyler Tengan as coach

Skyler Tengan has a vision for Damien baseball. The former Mid-Pacific infielder was hired to guide the Monarchs on Tuesday. HHSAA proposal to DOH: football, girls volleyball in March

The next step for high school sports in Hawaii requires patience. More patience. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the high school sports calendar is in the decisive hands of the Department of Health. The proposal from the Hawaii High School Athletic Association divides the sports season, from January to May, into two segments. Kahuku junior Seau Maiava racks up 16 sacks at PTP Showcase

Seau Maiava is a company man. The speedy outside linebacker from Kahuku took the field in St. George, Utah, for his Highlight-Hawaii Silver team on Friday as 11v11 scrimmages began. Three games later, the 6-foot, 200-pound senior had accumulated 16 sacks — as a defensive end on the strong side. Brother Power: Tua wins 1st start for Miami, Taulia leads Maryland

The weekend was nice, so very nice, for brothers Tua and Taulia Tagovailoa. Tua made his first start as a pro on Sunday, leading Miami over the Los Angeles Rams, 28-17. He didn’t have to throw often, completing 12 of his 22 attempts for 93 yards and one touchdown without a pick.
