Stadium expects big crowd for title games

By Jerry Campany on November 20, 2014

Aloha Stadium is expecting a large crowd for Friday’s state championship football games, urging fans to get their tickets early. Iolani and Lahainaluna will kick off at 4:30 p.m., followed by Mililani and Punahou. The Stadium’s media relations department sent out a release on Thursday saying they expect to exceed 25,000 paying customers, beating the 20,934 who watched the games last year. Here are the stadium’s recommendations: “The Main Parking Gate 1 and 3 will open to the public at […]

Mililani fights for its time at the top

By Nick Abramo on November 20, 2014

This is the moment of truth for the Mililani football team. The Trojans have been here before — the state championship game — and came out on the wrong end of a 28-22 showdown against Punahou last season. This is a new time against the same team and they’re fighting for a new result. Is Friday their day? Or not? One thing the coaches and players acknowledge is that they do not want to get off to a slow start […]

Punahou, Mililani in defensive duel?

By Paul Honda on November 20, 2014

Fans are expecting a great, close game. Sometimes it doesn’t work that way, though. Expect a close one, get a blowout. Or expect a blowout, end up with a close one. By all measures, though, this is the matchup of all matchups in 2014 for Hawaii high school football. No. 1-ranked Punahou and No. 2-ranked Mililani in the Division I final of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Championships at Aloha Stadium. We know what we know. Punahou (8-0) has scored […]

By Hawaii Prep World on November 20, 2014

The Star-Advertiser’s Paul Honda and Billy Hull break down Friday night’s football doubleheader at Aloha Stadium as ‘Iolani and Lahainaluna square off for the Division II state championship, followed by a battle of undefeated teams as No. 1 Punahou tangles with No. 2 Mililani in a rematch of last year’s state final, won by the Buffanblu.

Prime Punahou: Loose, calm, ready

By Paul Honda on November 19, 2014

You might think there would be a lot of formality and tension at practice just two days before the biggest game of the year. That notion would be partially correct. The defending state champion Punahou Buffanblu (8-0) worked through reps in rhythm, a well-oiled machine from the Diamond Head end zone, where special teams worked through PATs — and Jon Toner’s booming, soaring kicks — and the rest of the team worked out by position. Linebackers in the Ewa red […]

VIDEO: KS-Hawaii vs. #8 Lahainaluna

By Paul Honda on November 19, 2014

The Lunas’ defense was relentless and everywhere, picking off five passes in a 52-7 win over Kamehameha-Hawaii in the semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division II State Championships.

VIDEO: HHSAA presser: Ane, York

By Paul Honda on November 18, 2014

These press conferences are great for media in one sense: everybody gets a chance to talk to the high school coach of their choice. Of course, we’re talking coaches of teams that have made it this far. The first presser comes before the opening round of the state tourney. That’s borderline madhouse since there are six teams in Division I and six teams in D-II, and tracking down all 12 coaches is nearly impossible in a limited amount of time. […]

The answer man: Mililani’s Rex Manu (extended)

By Paul Honda on November 18, 2014

(Here’s the longer version of this morning’s feature Star-Advertiser story on Rex Manu.) For some time now, he’s been the Answer Man. Rex Manu gets to the classroom after school while other kids are gallivanting their way off campus to Jamba Juice or Burger King. He sits in Rod York’s classroom, waiting. Waiting. Soon enough, his Mililani teammates show up, books and backpacks in hand. Manu is a 6-foot-2, 290-pound defensive tackle, offensive lineman, playmaker, standout force of nature on […]
