No superstars: Just one team and another title

By Paul Honda on November 23, 2014

This could’ve been the year Lahainaluna finally broke through to win the Division II state championship. Instead, ‘Iolani proved once again why it is the class of D-II with an utterly convincing 31-14 win on Friday in the final of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Championships. That’s eight state championships in the last 11 seasons for coach Wendell Look and his program. The Lunas came into the final unbeaten with a dominant ground attack, but the Raiders and defensive coordinator […]

Mililani drops surrealistic Prep bomb

By Nick Abramo on November 22, 2014

Quarterback McKenzie Milton used the word “surreal” to describe the way he felt after Mililani’s gripping 53-45 victory over Punahou in the Division I state championship game Friday night. But the game itself and the atmosphere inside Aloha Stadium was, to name-drop a rock album from the ’60s, a “Surrealistic Pillow” for fans to sit back with, relax and watch perhaps the best Hawaii high school football game ever played. For most of the season, two mighty offenses flexed their […]

Milton’s record night carries Mililani

By Billy Hull on November 21, 2014

Mililani’s last man standing did it all. While the Trojans suffered key injuries to right tackle Jordan Agasiva and running back Vavae Malepeai, quarterback McKenzie Milton never lost focus of the task at hand. The junior signal caller broke the Mililani single-game passing record with 421 yards on 29 of 47 passing and threw seven touchdown passes in a 53-45 win over Punahou on Friday night at Aloha Stadium to give the Trojans their first Division I state football championship. […]

TRENCH WARFARE: Uluave vs. Manu

By Billy Hull on November 21, 2014

The top two players in the state still uncommitted square off head-to-head as Punahou OL Semisi Uluave (6-6, 315, Sr.) will try to hold off Mililani defensive tackle Rex Manu (6-2, 290) in the Division I state final. As always, this is purely for fun. Each series is scored like a boxing round with a 10-point must system. Check out the other battle featuring Punahou’s Canton Kaumatule vs. Mililani’s Jordan Agasiva. SERIES 1 Uluave starts the game at center and […]

TRENCH WARFARE: Agasiva vs. Kaumatule

By Billy Hull on November 21, 2014

It’s time for the big boys as Punahou’s Canton Kaumatule (6-7, 290, Sr.), who is headed to Oregon in the spring, will face off with Mililani’s Jordan Agasiva (6-3, 290, Sr.), who will stay home and play for Hawaii, in this episode of Trench Warfare. As always, this is purely for fun. Each series is scored like a boxing round with a 10-point must system. Check out the other Trench Warfare battle featuring Punahou’s Semisi Uluave against Mililani’s Rex Manu. […]

TRENCH WARFARE: Mowat vs. Ide

By Billy Hull on November 21, 2014

It’s Oahu vs. Maui in the Division II state final as ‘Iolani, winner of seven of the last eight state football titles, takes on Lahainaluna, looking for its first state crown. Our battle in the trenches features Lahainaluna’s two-way lineman, Connor Mowat (6-feet-0, 270 pounds, Senior), on defense, going up against ‘Iolani center Devin Ide (5-11, 218, Jr.). The Raiders can’t afford to be one-dimensional against the Lunas. They have to run the ball. How Ide holds up against Mowat […]

TW: Naeole vs. Sulunga-Kahaialii

By Billy Hull on November 21, 2014

There’s no secret to Lahainaluna’s success. The Lunas are going to try to pound the ball down ‘Iolani’s throat. If there’s one player on the ‘Iolani defense that can stand out and have a big game it’s defensive end Christian Naeole. Our Trench Warfare episode on this side of the ball pits Naeole (5-9, 186, Jr.) against Lunas left tackle Danny Sulunga-Kahaialii (6-4, 275, Sr.), who will enjoy close to a 100-pound advantage. Expect Naeole to move around a bit […]
