OIA boys soccer brackets

By Jerry Campany on January 24, 2015

Is the OIA ready for another boys soccer game between rivals Kalani and Kaiser? Only Radford stands in its way. Defending OIA champion Kaiser drew the fifth seed in the upcoming OIA boys soccer tournament, forcing the Cougars to travel to Kahuku to take on Radford to return to states and reach the second round of the league tournament. And Kalani, which beat Kaimuki 9-0 behind two goals from Takahiro Kosins in the regular-season final, will be waiting there. Kaiser […]

Kaiser paddlers maintain winning ways

By Kyle Galdeira on January 24, 2015

It appears as though the Kaiser outrigger canoe paddling program has gotten the hang of winning on the water. In the first 13 seasons of the Oahu Interscholastic Association including paddling as a sanctioned sport, the Cougars came up short of winning any championship hardware. However, over the last two seasons, Kaiser has rallied to win three paddling titles including the boys and mixed titles during Saturday’s OIA championship regatta at Keehi Lagoon. With the addition of the brand-new hardware, […]

Pascua’s victory highlights MPI meet

By Nick Abramo on January 23, 2015

‘Iolani’s KJ Pascua likes his end game. The Raiders wrestler said the way he finishes matches has made the difference in his three close encounters against Pac-Five’s Cole Chandler in the 145-pound class. “I felt like I kind of wore him out,” Pascua said after his 10-8 overtime win over Chandler on Friday night at the Mid-Pacific gym. “I was able to capitalize by pushing a little more at the end. “We are pushing it all the way to the […]

Swimming: Punahou’s Foster cruises

By Jerry Campany on January 23, 2015

Punahou sophomore Lia Foster put on a show in her school’s pool on Friday, winning two events in an ILH meet. Foster beat Mid-Pacific sensation Rebecca Walton by a wide margin in the 220 IM, clocking a time of 2:10.80 to the senior’s 2:16.00. Foster then took out another of Mid-Pacific’s fastest girls with a win over Lena Hayakawa in the 100 butterfly. Foster was credited with a time of 58.29 seconds to Hayakawa’s 58.60. Hayakawa earned a win of […]

Kalaheo paddlers going for it all

By Kyle Galdeira on January 23, 2015

As their brethren on the boys basketball team currently occupies the top spot in the Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 poll of media and coaches, Kalaheo’s paddlers carry some extra motivation to match—or surpass—the success of their hardcourt cohorts in pursuit of state championship gold early next month. However, before the Mustangs chase their first state boys paddling crown since 2008, the experienced crew will attempt to claim its fifth consecutive Oahu Interscholastic Association title Saturday afternoon in the league championship regatta […]

Kaiser looks like a completely different animal

By Paul Honda on January 23, 2015

On Thursday night, unranked Kaiser stepped into the charming, antiquated and tiny gym at Roosevelt High School. The Lady Cougars showed that yes, they’ve come a long way since taking their lumps from Lahainaluna, Hilo and ‘Iolani way back in mid-November during preseason. The young Cougars lost to those three Top-10 teams by a total of 108 points. That’s an average margin of 36 points. It was ugly. Kaiser’s not the same team now. Brandi Baker was a studette at […]

Recap: Rosy future for Rough Riders

By Paul Honda on January 23, 2015

Clearly, Roosevelt is the class of the Oahu Interscholastic Association, that enormous entity also known as the largest and largesse of leagues in the 50th state. Of course, just because a league is gigantic — 23 girls-basketball playing programs — doesn’t necessarily make it the best league from top to bottom. But among the OIA’s finest, Roosevelt — voted No. 2 in the state by coaches and media — is a step ahead. Literally. In all, though, it was Roosevelt’s […]
