Matas’ guile brings victory to Mililani

By Nick Abramo on February 6, 2015

People in the stands at the Castle High field Thursday night saw Mililani’s Marc Matas score with a header on Jarad Choquette’s corner kick for a 1-0 win over Kalaheo in the OIA boys soccer semifinals. What the spectators may not have seen is the jockeying for position that went on seconds before the goal. By Jerry Campany on February 6, 2015

Kamehameha-Kapalama has pretty much dominated state canoe paddling since its inception in 2002, but there is still one thing left to accomplish that nobody has done before. The boys crew will be going for its third straight title, it has won back-to-back three times but never completed a three-peat. It’ll be senior aloha night, sure, but what will make this game special, meaningful and emotional will be the return of a player who saw the lives of his family, especially his father, get turned cruelly upside down and inside out in just a few short months. Senior Ben Swanson will fly back from Minnesota to participate in the 5 p.m. game at […]

Walter Young is the new varsity football coach at Waianae High School. Young is a 10-year member of the coaching staff, including the last two as junior varsity head coach. “We really wanted to hire somebody in house,” athletic director Glenn Tokunaga said. “He’s been through the system. He knows the kids and what we expect in the athletic program at Waianae.” Young replaces the recently departed Daniel Matsumoto, who stepped down last week after 15 years as head coach. […]
