Govs defend title: ‘All guts, all brains’

By Paul Honda on February 19, 2015

The numbers, oh boy. The analytics, or whatever you might want to call them, aren’t entirely pretty when Farrington plays basketball. Even winning basketball. How does a team of players 6-foot and under win an OIA championship, knocking off No. 5 Campbell (at Campbell) in overtime, No. 1 Kalaheo (again in OT) and, as of tonight, behemoth No. 2 Kahuku in the final, 48-44? Farrington began the season hot, hot, hot, picking up where it left off after a runner-up […]

The 2 sides of the disputed ‘Iolani-Maryknoll call

By Nick Abramo on February 19, 2015

For the record, I am pretty much in the center of the two sides of this situation. Can see it both ways. We’re talking about a changed call by the officials in the ‘Iolani vs. Maryknoll basketball game on Wednesday night. Spartans coach Kelly Grant was upset. Meanwhile, Raiders coach Dean Shimamoto was doing whatever he could to help his team by letting the officials know what he understood high school basketball rules to be. High-profile spectators (who shall go […]

Paddlers Could Soon See New Sand

By Kyle Galdeira on February 19, 2015

Keehi Lagoon has become one of Oahu’s most heavily-used venues for participants, coaches and onlookers engaging in the state sport of outrigger canoe paddling. However, while the lagoon’s waters provide a fair, flat race course, the site has been devoid of a true sandy shore for years and the safety of those using the site has come into question. If a new bill making its way through the state legislature becomes law, the lagoon’s beach park will be replenished with […]

Soccer Saga, Episode 4: Punahou’s fruitful circle

By Nick Abramo on February 17, 2015

This postgame huddle had meaning. Actually, it was a postseason huddle. ILH champion Punahou had just fallen victim to a Mililani comeback in the girls soccer state tournament quarterfinals on Saturday, and the Buffanblu, after the handshake line, got together in a circle. The season was over, so it was time for the players, coaches and managers to say goodbye for now. One of the first things coach Starr Johnson said after the final whistle and before the huddle was: […]

Soccer Saga, Episode 3: Trojans find a way

By Nick Abramo on February 17, 2015

Between first-round matches at Kamehameha’s Kunuiakea Stadium on Friday, the rain started to fall for the first time that day. It was time for an interview with one of the key components in Mililani’s attack — Tia Furuta. The Trojans had just beaten Kamehameha-Maui 7-1 in the first round of the girls soccer state tournament and were preparing for a major conflict against ILH champion Punahou on Saturday. Furuta, the OIA’s leading scorer, scored twice against the Warriors. She was […]

State DI boys soccer brackets

By Jerry Campany on February 15, 2015

It turns out Kapolei’s only loss of the season was not as harmful as it seemed at the time. The Hurricanes lost to Kalani in penalty kicks in the semifinals of the OIA tournament, but were rewarded by the HHSAA with home matches in the first two rounds of the state tournament. ILH champion ‘Iolani predictably earned the top seed, and will play the winner between Hilo and Kapolei on Saturday at Kapolei. The Hurricanes host the Vikings on Friday. […]
