HHSAA state tournament media guide

By Jerry Campany on February 24, 2015

Regular readers of this site know that nobody has scored more points in a state boys basketball game than Punahou’s Ia Saipaia. But Thomas Yoshida gives us so much more. Yoshida worked up a media guide for the HHSAA that is packed full of information, research that he says was 15 years in the making. He didn’t do it alone, of course, getting help from Stacy Kaneshiro, Frank Mauz and others. The avalanche begins with Sam Johnson’s 43 points for […]

Isobe at epicenter of Mililani’s state-title run

By Nick Abramo on February 22, 2015

At Mililani’s lowest point of the season, coach Ray Akiona referred the media to junior fullback Kasey Isobe. Little did Akiona know that Isobe would be the one who delivered his team to its zenith by scoring the winning goal in Saturday’s 1-0 double-overtime state championship victory over previously undefeated ‘Iolani at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Trojans’ amazing run to the state title might not have been possible had it not been for a loss in a huge […]

OIA West wrestling championships

By Jerry Campany on February 21, 2015

The usual suspects won the West. Zack Diamond, Tristan Ludiazo and Liam Corbett all won their brackets at the OIA Western Division championships, with Diamond and Corbett winning easily and Ludiazo executing his regular clutch performance. Diamond beat Waianae’s Sheldon Bailey 15-4 in his final and Corbett shut out Mililani’s Marquis Dominique 9-0 in his. Ludiazo beat Radford’s John Patrick 6-4. Josh Gallarde of Campbell probably won the toughest bracket, beating Mililani’s Isaac Diamond, Pearl City’s Makoa Cooper and Aaron […]

State boys basketball brackets

By Jerry Campany on February 21, 2015

You can call it the group of death. Punahou, Kalaheo and Kahuku are all in the same half of the bracket in the state boys basketball tournament beginning next week. The Buffanblu received the top seed and will play the winner between Maui and Kalaheo. Konawaena got the fourth seed and gets the winner between Kahuku and Moanalua. As strong as the top half is, the bottom is set up for a surprise. Kamehameha-Hawaii and Campbell play for the right […]

State’s best: ‘Iolani, Mililani play for title

By Nick Abramo on February 20, 2015

The two best girls soccer teams in the state made it through to the state final with wins Friday night, so if you haven’t attended a match this year, you will want to go to Saturday’s ‘Iolani vs. Mililani showdown. It’s at 7 p.m. at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Raiders haven’t lost all year long, but because of three ties in the ILH, they finished behind one-loss Punahou in the standings and were not seeded for the states. As […]

Waialua girls soccer boom just beginning

By Nick Abramo on February 20, 2015

To say the Waialua girls soccer program is on the upswing would be an understatement. The Bulldogs are thriving. After going 0-10 a year ago, the Bulldogs started 0-6 this season, but came on strong to finish as OIA Division II champions and a spot in the state tournament. A 6-0 loss to Pac-Five in the quarterfinals of the Division II state tourney Thursday didn’t dampen Waialua’s season one bit. “As a coach, I have nothing to complain about,” Bulldogs […]
