Tata picks Hao, Welch for Kahuku football staff

New Kahuku football coach Vavae Tata has his new staff in place, he confirmed Monday. Former Saint Louis and University of Hawaii quarterback John Hao is the offensive coordinator. Gerald Welch, another former Crusader and Rainbow Warrior, will coach the wide receivers. Tata, a former UCLA defensive end, will double up as the defensive coordinator. Matautia, Aiono are OIA players of year

Austin Matautia of Moanalua and Max Aiono of Leilehua are the OIA’s East and West boys volleyball players of the year, the league announced Monday. Punahou turns aside Big Island’s Warriors

Based on history and math, when Punahou enters a boys volleyball season, it has a seven in 10 chance to win a state championship by season’s end. Since its inception in 1969, there have been 47 boys volleyball state tournaments and Punahou has won 33 of them.
