Freshman Gabriel debuts for Trojans

By Nick Abramo on August 1, 2015

By all accounts, the Mililani offense downshifted when it turned to backup quarterback Dillon Gabriel on Saturday night. Ahoy, it would have been a downshift no matter who Trojans head coach Rod York threw in there. You simply don’t replace the value of McKenzie Milton in one night. Just not possible. Milton has been a mainstay at the position, a star, if you will, since his sophomore year and he has all sorts of stats and accolades to back up […]

Mililani backups edge Kamehameha

By Nick Abramo on August 1, 2015

It was all about the backups Saturday night as Mililani and Kamehameha squared off for a controlled football scrimmage at John Kauinana Stadium. The Trojans and Warriors starters played one series each in the scrimmage in which each team got 10 offensive plays in a row before the ball was turned over to the other squad’s offense. With the first-teamers on the field, Kamehameha scored on a 49-yard pass from Fatu Sua-Godinet to Kumoku Noa, and the Warriors’ defense stopped […]

By Nick Abramo on August 1, 2015

Countdown story (subscription required) 2015 Govs coaching staff 41 years of Farrington football (1973-2014) Farrington’s all-time single-game leaders In Farrington football circles, everyone knows about the Governors’ beloved Bamboolas. And they’re back again for another go-round with the old ground and pound, old-fashioned football this season. If one thing that’s constant at Farrington, it’s the massive front wall of the offensive line. This year’s Bamboolas, however, have an oddity, someone who head coach Randall Okimoto calls both the “comedian” of […]

Mililani holds off Kahuku in Tata’s first test

By Nick Abramo on July 31, 2015

Two words: McKenzie Milton. If you don’t know by now, he makes the Mililani offense go, and he’s been doing it for two-plus years. Milton and the Trojans defeated Kahuku 44-30 on Friday night in a scrimmage at Mililani’s John Kauinana Stadium. At times, Kahuku pressured Milton, but the senior quarterback still found holes to pass and run through in leading the way. It was a statement game of sorts for the Trojans, the defending state champions who stopped the […]

Kamehameha, Farrington duel and dine

By Nick Abramo on July 31, 2015

It was a close encounter, and just a controlled scrimmage, but the Kamehameha and Farrington football teams finally got to put the pads on and see what it’s like to really compete for the first time this season on Thursday. No score was kept, and, unofficially, Kamehameha scored three TDs to Farrington’s two, but that statistic is beside the point. The contest represented the de facto battle of Kalihi. The two schools are 1.2 miles apart and many players know […]

The Sabers, ranked No. 7 in the Star-Advertiser Preseason Top 10, figure to contend in the OIA Blue, although figuring out how to stop defending state champion Mililani will determine how far they can go. Running back Terell Johnson returns on […]

Four Farrington players gone to Las Vegas team

By Nick Abramo on July 31, 2015

Like it or not, transfers are and have been a big part of Hawaii high school football for a long time. Many observers feel that Farrington was fortunate to pick up quarterback Justin Uahinui from Kaiser last week, and that may prove to be true. But Farrington, it turns out, lost at least five starters to other schools over the summer, including four that went to Silverado in Las Vegas where former Philadelphia Eagles star Randall Cunningham is the head […]

No. 8 Kaiser Countdown story (subscription required) 2015 Cougars coaching staff All-time Kaiser scores/statistics Kaiser single-game record holders Cameron Higgins has faced quite a few challenges since taking over for Rich Miano last season as the Kaiser head football coach. The latest was his No. 1 quarterback, junior Justin Uahinui, transferring to Farrington two weeks before the season opener. Uahinui said earlier this week it was his parents decision, but the end result is a Cougars team scrambling to retool […]
