Cal Lee’s Saint Louis football staff for 2015

By Nick Abramo on August 4, 2015

The Saint Louis Crusaders, under coach Cal Lee, will be trying to improve on their second-place finish in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu of a year ago. Lee, who won 14 Oahu Prep Bowl titles and one state championship in his second incarnation as the Crusaders’ coach from 1982 to 2001, is in his second year in his return as head coach of the team. He relayed his 2015 staff to Hawaii Prep World during practice last week. The staff […]

Tokuda and York: potential high for Mules’ Muti

By Nick Abramo on August 3, 2015

Sometimes one thing leads to another. When reached Monday night for a report on the team’s canceled practice, Leilehua football coach Nolan Tokuda answered questions about how some of his players and coaches were affected by the mandatory evacuations enforced by firefighters due to the wildfire near Wahiawa. Eventually, the subject changed to football and that’s when Tokuda let us know about one of his players that we would be wise to watch out for. He was talking about 6-foot-4, […]

Top 10 Countdown: No. 4 Kahuku

By Nick Abramo on August 3, 2015

Countdown story (subscription required) 2015 Kahuku coaching staff 41 years of Kahuku football (1973-2014) Kahuku Football Home Kahuku offensive coordinator John Hao has an interesting decision to make. The former Saint Louis standout quarterback has something that he didn’t think was possible: four quarterbacks who can legitimately throw the ball. So, not a bad problem to have for the team ranked No. 4 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Preseason Top 10. But, which one will rise up? Kesi Ah-Hoy, the veteran […]

Govs football fans will see home games in ’16

By Nick Abramo on August 2, 2015

There’s a lot of out with the old and in with the new at Farrington. While being interviewed by Hawaii Prep World last Tuesday, Governors football coach Randall Okimoto was standing near the school’s rundown weight room, which sits under the bleachers of the school’s pool. A pickup truck was about 30 feet away, loaded with trash that came from a retired physical education teacher’s office. Students’ health notebooks from previous years, a broken down bookcase, one old Nike sneaker, […]

Hao says Tagovailoa is best of Passas’ bunch

By Nick Abramo on August 2, 2015

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser and Hawaii Prep World sportswriters were at least a little surprised early last season when Saint Louis coach Cal Lee told one of them that sophomore Tua Tagovailoa was named the starting quarterback to replace incumbent senior starter Ryder Kuhns. Kuhns put up fine numbers (2,016 yards and 25 touchdowns passing) as a junior and was off to a fast start as a senior. In came Tagovailoa, the dual runnning and passing threat, and he went on […]

What Have We Learned?

By Paul Honda on August 2, 2015

In this edition of What Have We Learned (Sunday, Aug. 2), I’ll start it up and hopefully our other footballholics on staff and otherwise not on staff can chime in. I saw parts of two scrimmages and a full one this week. Together we can come to some agreement or, better yet, complete disagreement, about what we’ve learned in Week 1. 1. Coaches don’t like early-season prognostications. This season, as one of our editors points out, we didn’t have coaches […]

Quarterback Fatu Sua-Godinet, who was responsible for 16 touchdowns (nine passing, seven rushing) as a junior is back for his third year in charge of the Warriors offense. Six of those nine […]
