‘Football is supposed to be fun.’

By Jerry Campany on August 15, 2015

Losing coaches and fans aren’t the only ones who have had their fill of blowouts. Winning coaches don’t count it as the best use of time, either. Rod York, coach of defending champion Mililani, was just glad it was all over when the clock struck zero on his team’s 73-14 rout of undermanned McKinley on Saturday. “It wasn’t fun for McKinley and it wasn’t fun for us,” York told Star-Advertiser reporter Kyle Sakamoto. “It wasn’t a fun game. Football is […]

Kamehameha’s Yam breaks Spencer’s mark

By Billy Hull on August 15, 2015

Caleb Spencer‘s single-game passing mark lasted 13 years at Kamehameha. Leave it to a sophomore backup to break it. Thomas Yam, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound sophomore, stepped in for injured starter Fatu Sua-Godinet and despite playing only one snap in the second half, threw for a school-record 323 yards and four touchdowns in a 53-0 win over Baldwin on Saturday at Kunuiakea Stadium. Yam completed 70 percent (21-for-30) of his passes with star wideout Kumoku Noa hauling in seven of them […]

Coming off a nice opening-weekend win at Waianae, Kamehameha plays its first game of the season at Kunuiakea Stadium welcoming Baldwin to Oahu for a nonleague game. The Warriors will be interesting to watch on offense as they play without three-year starting quarterback Fatu Sua-Godinet, who will miss at least two weeks with a knee injury. The Bears make their season debut with new head coach Pohai Lee in charge. Kamehameha gets the ball first after a 30-yard kickoff return […]

Waianae stays closer to the vest for OT win

By Nick Abramo on August 15, 2015

Ball control was the winning formula in what may have been the most exciting football game of the season in Hawaii so far. Waianae wound up tripping Moanalua in overtime 43-37 with a steady diet of between-the-tackle runs in the game that also featured a dash of everything else. When the game was on the line, the Seariders (1-1) didn’t veer much from their pound, pound, pound plan, adding in an occasional pass to keep Na Menehune honest in the […]

Pearl City’s Maneafaiga stands alone

By Billy Hull on August 15, 2015

Pearl City’s Joe Maneafaiga is going to have a tough time improving on his first game as Pearl City’s featured running back. The 5-food-10, 170-pound junior set the Chargers’ single-game rushing record with 217 yards in only three quarters of action to help Pearl City hold off a game Roosevelt squad 14-7 on Friday night in the OIA Division-II opener for both teams at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. Maneafaiga, who needed only 23 carries, broke Antoin Dewalt‘s mark of 216 yards […]
