Scrappers on Mililani defense step up again

By Nick Abramo on September 18, 2015

The Mililani defense has been called a lot of things this year — from one side of the spectrum, weak, to far on the other side, unsung. Whether the unit is weak or unsung or, one could argue, solid, one thing is for sure — it can scrap. Linebacker Ma’a Tanuvasa was out there putting the hits on left and right again on Thursday in a 71-28 win over Farrington, and he added an interception that led to a TD. Defensive […]

Govs hope defeat builds stronger team

By Paul Honda on September 18, 2015

It could happen all over again for the Farrington Governors. A year ago, they took a 27-point loss in a late September meeting with Mililani. That spurred Farrington to four wins in its next five games. The momentum came to a halt in the postseason, at the hands of Mililani, but it was a narrow 17-14 contest the second time. Mililani looked every bit the defending state champions, every bit like a team that has not lost to an island […]

Malepeai breaks Igber’s TD record

By Billy Hull on September 18, 2015

It was as simple as a touchdown can get — a 1-yard plunge up the middle for Mililani’s Vavae Malepeai that had much meaning. His third rushing touchdown in a 71-28 win over Farrington on Thursday night was the 57th of an illustrious three-year career, breaking the record of 56 held by ‘Iolani’s Joe Igber that has lasted for 16 years. You can watch the record-breaking TD here: http://www.hawaiiprepworld.com/football/video-no-3-mililani-vs-no-6-farrington/. Maleepeai has rushed for at least 20 touchdowns as a sophomore […]

LIVE BLOG: Mililani 71, Farrington 28

By Billy Hull on September 17, 2015

With no disrespect to Kailua, which at 5-1 is one of the best stories of the 2015 Hawaii high school football season, the battle tonight at Aloha Stadium between No. 3 Mililani and No. 6 Farrington is — for all intents and purposes — for the OIA Blue crown. The Surfriders host the Trojans next week and could cause mayhem with a win, but the Govs and Trojans are the only two undefeated teams in league play left in the […]

It’s pick your poison for Farrington defense

By Paul Honda on September 16, 2015

For all of the talk of Mililani’s leaky defense against Liberty, the offense has had no problems at all. The Trojans have been held under 50 points in every game except one this year, scoring ONLY 49 against Campbell. Farrington has given up more than 19 only once, a 35-point outburst by Moanalua’s machine. The two units go head-to-head on Thursday at Aloha Stadium. It figures to be the first real test for the Trojans’ offense. McKenzie Milton will get […]

Reviewing the hit that ended Yam’s season

By Nick Abramo on September 16, 2015

Kamehameha’s chances to win the Interscholastic League of Honolulu football title took a huge blow Saturday when sophomore quarterback Thomas Yam‘s season ended with a broken collarbone suffered in the fourth quarter against Saint Louis in the league opener for both teams at Aloha Stadium. Yam had just scored his third rushing touchdown of the game to cut Saint Louis’ lead to 31-27 with 4:30 remaining when he was hit by Saint Louis defender Dylan Toilolo after crossing the goal […]

Trojans await Govs’ balanced offense Thursday

By Nick Abramo on September 16, 2015

Due to No. 3 Mililani’s potent offense that is averaging 59.2 points in five games, the Trojans’ defense gets a bit overlooked. The biggest question for the unit — after giving up 76 points in a loss to Liberty in Henderson, Nev., two weeks ago — is how will it hold up against Thursday night’s opponent, Oahu Interscholastic Association Blue rival and sixth-ranked Farrington at 7:30 p.m. at Aloha Stadium. Certainly not as imposing as last season’s defense, which included […]

Cal Lee: No softies on the schedule

By Nick Abramo on September 16, 2015

If the Saint Louis-Kamehameha game last weekend is any indication of how the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I football season will go, it’s going to be a rip-roaring campaign. The top-ranked Crusaders (3-0, 1-0) just got by No. 5 Kamehameha, 31-27 on Saturday at Aloha Stadium. Saint Louis head coach Cal Lee was relieved when it was over. “We expected a tough game and that’s what it was,” he said. “We were fortunate to hang on and get the […]
