Neves’ return extends Kaimuki’s season

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 17, 2015

Andrew Neves wrote himself into Kaimuki lore with his sideline sprint to the game-winning score in the Bulldogs’ jaw-dropping 27-22 playoff win over Nanakuli on Friday night. With the Bulldogs less than 14 seconds away from turning in their pads, Neves said a prayer before fielding a kickoff and extended Kaimuki’s remarkable turnaround season with his lightning-strike return as time expired. “What I told myself was do it for my boys, do it for my coaches,” Neves said as the […]

Kailua couldn’t stop Waianae’s running attack

By Nick Abramo on October 17, 2015

Kailua head coach Joe Wong was anticipating a classic heavyweight bout and he got what he asked for against Waianae. The Seariders (7-2) ran the ball 58 times and rolled up 308 rushing yards in a 37-22 dumping of the Surfriders at Waianae’s Raymond Torii Field on Friday night, leaving Wong and the Windward-side bunch in the losing corner before a long, quiet, 40-mile bus ride home. Several times, the Seariders’ line plowed big holes up the middle, but most […]

‘Iolani’s Mizutani sets ILH D-I record

By Billy Hull on October 16, 2015

In his first start against a Division I opponent, ‘Iolani’s Tai-John Mizutani looked completely lost. In the final game of his sophomore season, Mizutani looked like a seasoned veteran. Mizutani ended the 2015 season shredding the Kamehameha defense for 485 yards on 40-of-57 attempts to set an ILH Division I record for passing yards in a single game. He also broke the all-time ‘Iolani passing mark by almost 100 yards. Mizutani threw three touchdowns and had three different receivers go […]

The season will end Friday afternoon for both ‘Iolani and No. 5 Kamehameha, which have been eliminated from postseason play. The Raiders will try to end the season with their only win in ILH play in their homecoming game against the Warriors, who will not play on despite a No. 5 ranking. ‘Iolani is expected to have RB KJ Pascua and WR Keoni-Kordell Makekau available for today’s game after both missed last week’s 31-7 loss to Saint Louis. Kapolei, Kahuku become familiar foes

By Paul Honda on October 16, 2015

Kapolei can’t seem to avoid Kahuku no matter what changes come to the OIA divisional structure. On Aug. 14, the ‘Canes lost to Kahuku 27-7. Last season, they lost a regular-season opener at Kahuku 33-19 on a night when offensive lineman Noah Punahou Mahelona‘s father, John, collapsed in the bleachers and later died. Two months later, Kapolei lost at Kahuku in a playoff matchup, 9-0. Kapolei does have a history of winning at one of the toughest sites for any […]

Moanalua, Mililani in another battle

By Paul Honda on October 16, 2015

The OIA’s most balanced conference (Blue) was often merciless for teams like Moanalua during the regular season. Last week’s 58-22 win at Leilehua demonstrated the strength of the playoff format, which allows all but the last-place teams of each conference to qualify for the playoffs. Alaka‘i Yuen‘s breakout season has yet to end. The junior has thrown 25 TD passes with just eight picks (2,286 yards) in nine games. Na Menehune continue to spread the ball around; seven players have […]
