‘Iolani’s Beaman is Gatorade runner of year

‘Iolani’s Amanda Beaman is the 2015 Hawaii Gatorade girls cross country runner of the year, the Gatorade Company announced Thursday. The award recognizes athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character. Beaman is now a finalist for the national runner of the year. McKnight applies to coach at Moanalua

Dennis McKnight, the former University of Hawaii assistant football coach, confirmed Thursday that he applied for the vacant Moanalua High head coaching job. McKnight said he is also going to apply at Kamehameha for the Warriors’ vacant head coaching job when the school begins accepting applications from candidates in the near future. Every year, fans and members of the media like to discuss an Oahu Interscholastic Association and Interscholastic League of Honolulu merger for a football superconference. Akina files suit against Kahuku and parents

Kahuku boys basketball coach Alan Akina filed a lawsuit in the First Circuit Court on Monday against the Department of Education, the Kahuku administration and some parents of players on the team. Akina contends he was wrongly suspended due to placing his freshman son, Kawika Akina, on the varsity team. Kahuku principal Pauline Masaniai and athletic director Gillian Yamagata were named as defendants along with parents Deloma Sauvao and Pua Spencer, and the Department of Education. Malepeai leads All-American bowl in rushing

Mililani’s Vavae Malepeai, the state’s all-time high school leading rusher, passed his first test on a big stage. Malepeai ran eight times for 66 yards, the most of any running back at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Saturday at San Antonio’s Alamodome. Kapolei football coach Darren Hernandez said on Saturday night’s OC-16 telecast of the Junior Prep Sports Paradise Football Classic that June Jones will take over as his offensive coordinator next season. Jones, the former University of Hawaii football coach, who was last at SMU, will take over an offense led by current freshman Taulia Tagovailoa.
