By Billy Hull on January 29, 2016

‘Iolani senior Keoni-Kordell Makekau said Friday he has committed to Navy and will sign with the Midshipmen next Wednesday on National Letter of Intent Signing Day. The speedy 5-foot-10, 170-pound wide receiver visited Navy back in November and took in a home game against SMU. He committed shortly after the trip but admits he’s not into social media much, so word hadn’t really gotten out. “Yeah I don’t really do much of that,” Makekau said. “I committed after my trip.” […]

By Nick Abramo on January 29, 2016

Harley Simon is only a junior, but she sure played like a senior on Thursday night. She dove to the floor for loose balls on numerous occasions in a comeback attempt that eventually failed. Her Mid-Pacific team cut an 18-point halftime deficit throughout the second half, but the Owls ended up losing to Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball front-runner Hawaii Baptist 45-35. It was a party-like atmosphere at the Mid-Pacific gym. The band played. They announced raffle winners in […]

Secret no more: Kailua’s Gaisoa picks Wazzu

By Nick Abramo on January 28, 2016

It was a pretty well-kept secret. Kailua coach Joe Wong knew it. Offensive tackle Nilsson Gaisoa and his family knew it. Maybe even a few friends. No rush to tell anybody, right? It was the beginning of the football season in the fall that Gaisoa made an oral commitment to Washington State. The Cougars were the first to visit and recruit him. Other schools came after the season, but they were too late. Gaisoa wanted to get through the season […]

Girls pound-for-pound: It’s still Tehani’s time

By Jerry Campany on January 27, 2016

Waianae’s Tehani Carlson has more than stepped into the void left by the injured Teniya Alo. Carlson, a junior, has dominated the 122-pound division this season with Alo nursing an injury. She beat everyone in front of her to take the Garner Ivey, Officials and Paani. Carlson continued her steady climb into the girls Pound-for-Pound, pinning both of her opponents last week while watching Roosevelt’s Menjam Tamang lose to Moanalua’s Amanda Higa 6-4. Even if Alo returns to spoil Carlson’s […]
