Punahou’s Taulapapa offered by Virginia, Navy

By Nick Abramo on January 27, 2016

Punahou running back Wayne Taulapapa is taking an official football recruiting visit to Virginia this weekend. Taulapapa was recently offered scholarships by the Cavaliers and Navy, his father Mani Taualapapa said Wednesday. “He won’t be making any decisions until after the visit to Virginia,” Mani Taulapapa said. Taulapapa had an earlier commitment to BYU, but that scholarship offer was pulled in December, when new head coach Kalani Sitake replaced Bronco Mendenhall. “He (Wayne) visited BYU last summer and he made […]

By Billy Hull on January 26, 2016

Kamehameha senior defensive tackle Alema Kapoi will take his final recruiting trip of the season to Navy this weekend. When he gets home Sunday, he wants to have a decision made by the time he goes to bed. Kapoi, who is 6 feet and 265 pounds, will decide between three military schools: Army, Navy and Air Force. He said he talked to Hawaii coach Nick Rolovich on Monday but was not offered a scholarship, thus limiting his choices to the […]

Kamehameha linebacker Tainoa Foster, who was named to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser all-state first team last month, committed to Fresno State on Saturday. Foster, who also had offers from Washington State, Hawaii and Utah State, made his pledge while on his official visit with the Bulldogs. The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder visited Washington State the week before and had another official visit scheduled with San Diego State this weekend, but canceled his trip after making his commitment to head coach Tim DeRuyter and […]

Kona steady at No. 1 despite injuries (part 2)

By Paul Honda on January 26, 2016

See Part 1 here Radford’s lopsided win over rival Leilehua was enough to push the Rams up a notch to No. 7, swapping spots with ‘Iolani. The Rams have been impressive in the OIA West under coach Charles Chong. The stars have aligned and Chong has gotten plenty out the Rams. Mililani is still ranked in the Top 10, two spots behind Radford, even though star forward Shantel Appleby had been out since tweaking a knee in early December. She […]

Kona steady at No. 1 despite injuries (part 1)

By Paul Honda on January 26, 2016

See the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 here With or without their starting five intact, the Konawaena Wildcats aren’t missing a beat. Nope. The music still plays and the defending state champions continue to be a unanimous selection as the No. 1 team in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10. Chanelle Molina (ankle) and Mercedes Ihi Victor (back) have been sidelined for weeks now. This is where Coach Bobbie Awa’s persistent and consistent approach, using fundamentals on both ends, as […]

House of Tumble: St. Louis new No. 1 (part 2)

By Paul Honda on January 26, 2016

See Part 1 here Kalaheo made some headway this week, bumping up a notch to No. 8. After all these weeks of winning games and upsetting a good number of coaches and fans by running up 100-plus points on Anuenue (they did use reserves heavily that night), the Mustangs actually moved up after a 54-52 loss at Kailua. That OIA East is almost as compelling to watch as the ILH. Kalaheo has the skill players, and with Kekai Smith back […]

House of Tumble: St. Louis new No. 1 (part 1)

By Paul Honda on January 26, 2016

See the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10 here I was not kidding. The ILH gauntlet is real. Saint Louis woke us roundball fans up by suiting up a Wes Unseld mountain replica — Tristan Nichols — in Week 1 during the James Alegre Invitational. Allan Silva guided Farrington back to elite status the past few years. Now he’s doing it up on Kalaepohaku. Whenever that new gym is completed, Crusader basketball might be the hottest ticket in the league. Not […]
