Day 1 done: ‘Iolani, Kamehameha wrestle to leads

The ‘Iolani boys and Kamehameha girls are in the lead after the first day of the Chevron/Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Championships on Friday. Individually, the semifinal matches are all set and will start Saturday at 10 a.m. The Raiders boys team has 89 points, and Campbell (63.5), Kapolei (59.5), Waianae (56.5) and Moanalua (53.5) round out the top five. We’re 5 minutes away from tip-off for ILH runner-up Punahou and the OIA’s fifth-place team, Kahuku. Konawaena is at No. 24 in MaxPreps

State Division I girls basketball champion Konawaena is at No. 24 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 rankings. The Wildcats (15-0 in Hawaii and 27-1 overall) captured their sixth D-I state title since 2004 last week with a 44-34 victory over Maryknoll in the tournament final. The MaxPreps rankings released Feb. 17 are here: http://t.maxpreps.com/1RSuf8f. The Wildcats’ only loss came to No. 8 Forestville (Md.) in Washington D.C.


Kalani is top seed for boys soccer states

Oahu Interscholastic Association boys soccer champion Kalani is the No. 1 seed for next week’s Division I state tournament. Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Punahou is the second seed, followed by Maui Interscholastic League winner Kamehameha-Maui and Big Island Interscholastic Federation titlist Kealakehe as the third and fourth seeds. Hawaii Prep, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, is the top seed in Division II. Hilo’s Kalamanamana Harman was just trying to help out her goalkeeper, Saydee Bactad. It just so happens that she did it three times in the span of about 10 seconds. On an attack by Pearl City’s Randi Fontes down the right wing, a bounding ball eluded Bactad, so Harman ran toward the goal line and backpedaled a bit before knocking the ball out before it crossed the line.
