By Nick Abramo on February 20, 2016

Here’s what the Kamehameha and Kapolei head coach had to say about the upcoming Blaysen Terukina vs. Shandon Ilaban-Totten match in the 132-pound final at the state wrestling championships Saturday at Blaisdell Arena. Kamehameha head coach Ola Silva: It’s going to come down to who brings the right mind-set. That’s what it is in any championship match. That’s why I think Blaysen is doing such a great job today, pinning his opponent in the semifinal match. You could say this […]

Reyes regains feeling in extremities

By Jerry Campany on February 20, 2016

Caeleb Reyes, who suffered a hard fall in the semifinals of the Chevron state wrestling championships at the Blaisdell Arena on Saturday, is OK. Moanalua coach Darren Reyes reports that his son Caeleb’s X-rays came back fine and that he is sore but already fighting with the nurses because “in his mind, he is going to wrestle. He thinks his dad is going to make him wrestle.” Doctors told him it is a cracked vertebrae. He is not going to […]

Both are previous state champions and both are ranked in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s pound-for-pound rankings. Corbett is No. 2 and Pascua is No. 3. ‘Iolani head coach Walden Au: “They both come to the table with different strengths. For KJ, we’re hoping his endurance, his strength and his slickness is going to […]

LIVE BLOG: Girls wrestling semifinals

By Jerry Campany on February 20, 2016

We might not live blog the finals since it is on television anyway, but here is the road to the main event. Got a close race for the girls team title, Kamehameha leads defending champion Lahainaluna 101.5-97.5. Pearl City is way back in third at 57.5. The Warriors do not want it to come down to hoping Mataafa loses, because there is almost zero chance of that. I will try to update the top two team scores after every few […]

Final 4: ‘Iolani 61, Kaiser 42, F

By Paul Honda on February 19, 2016

A lot of fans have mentioned this: they wanted Kaiser and ‘Iolani in the state final, not semifinal. Well, things didn’t turn out that way. Kaiser lost in the OIA final and wound up in this bracket with the top seed, ILH champion ‘Iolani. So look at it this way: fans get a championship-game calibre matchup one day early. FIRST HALF Hugh Hogland is working the post smoothly and Helam Baldomero is having another productive game offensively for the Raiders. […]
