Baumholtz reflects on Chargers’ championship

By Nick Abramo on March 15, 2016

Two weeks after Pearl City won the Division I girls state soccer championship, head coach Frank Baumholtz III kept saying, “I’m still smiling.” And why not? It was the team’s first state title in 19 years. Baumholtz is usually quick to point out the difficulty of trying to get his messages across to teenagers, and on this particluar day, he was no different. It would not be incorrect to say that for Baumholtz, who is a Pearl City dentist, coaching […]

By Hawaii Prep World on March 15, 2016

Saint Louis four-star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa narrowed his list of college choices from at least 17 known offers down to eight Tuesday on Twitter. Tagovailoa wrote, in no particular order, his recruitment is down to Alabama, Ole Miss, USC, UCLA, Texas A&M, Washington, Hawaii and Arizona. USC is still considered the favorite to land the Crusaders QB’s services. UH is the only non-BCS school listed among the bunch. Tagovailoa performed in the Rivals Quarterback Challenge showcase over the weekend and […]

Q & A: Moanalua coach Alan Cabanting

By Paul Honda on March 14, 2016

The goals remain clearly in sight for Na Menehune of Moanalua: win the OIA, win the state title. Coach Alan Cabanting’s boys volleyball squad emerged at the Best of the West elite tournament in Poway, Calif. over the weekend in ninth place out of 32 powerhouse programs. Not bad for a public-school team playing in the esteemed event for the first time. Somewhere in the midst of all those matches and thousands of miles of travel, Coach Cabanting made some […]

Freshman Fontes tops in girls soccer

By Jerry Campany on March 13, 2016

Frank Baumholtz knows how to grow ’em. Baumholtz, the veteran Pearl City coach and the Star-Advertiser’s coach of the year, led the Chargers to the state title this year with a largely young group. How young? His best player, freshman Sunshine Fontes, is the Star-Advertiser all-state player of the year and fellow freshman Bree Fuller joined her on the first team. Sophomore Daelenn Tokunaga is also listed among the state’s elite. Fontes of Pearl City is the first freshman to […]

Punahou’s Ohata named boys soccer POY

By Jerry Campany on March 13, 2016

It seems to be the age of the goalkeeper. Punahou’s Tyler Ohata was judged the Star-Advertiser’s player of the year on Sunday, the third straight year a keeper was so honored. He follows Kalani’s Michael Stafford last year and Josh Adachi of Iolani the year before. You have to go all the way back to 2004 to find another keeper being named the Player of the Year, when Mililani’s Darren Smith was the choice. Ohata’s Buffanblu gave up only four […]

Q & A: Saint Louis football coach Cal Lee

By Paul Honda on March 11, 2016

It’s nearly mid-March, which means spring football is still some time away. The preseason, regular season, all light years away. But with so much attention on local prospects, especially Saint Louis juniors Tua Tagovailoa and Isaac Slade-Matautia, Hawaii Prep World caught up with Crusaders head football coach Cal Lee for a chat on Friday afternoon. Between the Prep Bowl/state-championship dynasty he built at Kalaepohaku and his later years as an assistant coach at the University of Hawaii, Lee’s perspective is […]

Kahuku’s Kaniho picks up 2 new offers

By Paul Honda on March 11, 2016

There are probably a few connecting flights between Honolulu and Nashville, Tenn. Marcus Mariota, the phenom from Saint Louis and Oregon, knows that well as the starting quarterback of the Tennessee Titans. Kekaula Kaniho, one of Kahuku’s all-state cornerbacks, might become familiar with that destination soon enough. Kaniho received offers on Thursday from Vanderbilt and Washington State. The tie-in to Commodore country? Kahuku head coach Vavae Tata was an assistant in player development at Vanderbilt in 2014. Kaniho already had […]

Gusman: ‘I’ll be glad when Chase Wago leaves’

By Paul Honda on March 10, 2016

Tuesday’s feature on Mid-Pacific “Whiz Kid” Chase Wago had just about everything, including his penchant for solving mathematical problems. But it didn’t include some intriguing comments by Saint Louis baseball coach George Gusman, who knows a gem when he sees one. “I’ve seen Chase Wago for four years now. He’s been a thorn in our side. I’ve seen him grow from a boy to a young man. He’s talented, smart and he carries himself very well on and off the […]
