‘Iolani’s Lau is a multifaceted athlete

By Nick Abramo on March 17, 2016

‘Iolani’s Everett Lau plays third base. Last year, he played left field and occasionally pitched. He’s also a bowler for the Raiders and he is a two-time West region national champion inline hockey player out of the Kapolei Inline Hockey Arenas, the state of the art two-rink facility that was built in 2010. On Wednesday, Lau added the word “power hitter” to his resume. Lau blasted two home runs out of the park at the ‘Iolani field in an 9-6 […]

Muramaru and baseball are a natural match

By Nick Abramo on March 17, 2016

Fourteen times in Dunn Muramaru‘s time as the head coach, the Mid-Pacific baseball team has placed in the top three of the Division I state tournament. That includes five titles and six runner-up finishes. And just as telling of the resiliency of the program is the 3-0 record in third-place state games, when, after a loss in the semifinals, the team did not fold and came back with a win. Muramaru himself is resiliency personified. While other Interscholastic League of […]

Left-hander Oley talks about this season’s Owls

By Nick Abramo on March 17, 2016

Through the years, Mid-Pacific baseball head coach Dunn Muramaru seems to always have a crafty left-hander in his rotation, and he’s got a good one in Alex Oley. While sitting down at the ‘Iolani baseball field with an Owls fan Wednesday, it was made known to Hawaii Prep World that the smooth pitcher didn’t achieve success by talent alone and that he is one of the hardest working players this fan has ever seen. Despite giving up three homers to […]

Offers pouring in for Mililani alum Agasiva

By Billy Hull on March 17, 2016

Former University of Hawaii signee Jordan Agasiva is spending as much time working in the classroom as on the football field. As a result, Division I schools are taking notice. The 6-foot-5, 310-pound freshman at Pima College was rated by HawaiiPrepWorld.com as the No. 2 lineman prospect in a loaded class of 2015 (behind Saint Louis’ Fred Ulu-Perry). A first-team all-state selection his senior year at Mililani, Agasiva didn’t qualify academically and had to enroll at a junior college. Check […]

Brennan to Moanalua possible, but not official

By Nick Abramo on March 16, 2016

Media reports that have Colt Brennan going to Moanalua as Na Menehune’s quarterbacks coach are premature. Yes, Brennan is interested in becoming an assistant to new head coach Savaii Eselu, and yes, Eselu wants him as his assistant. But the hire of the former University of Hawaii football star has not been finalized by the Moanalua administration. According to a Moanalua spokesman, senior-to-be quarterback Alakai Yuen has been working informally with Brennan, who was a Heisman Trophy candidate during his […]

Sister Act: Elisa, Trinity Favela sparkle

By Paul Honda on March 16, 2016

There is sibling rivalry, but in this case, it’s more like peas in a pod. Sisters Elisa and Trinity Favela started for the top-ranked Campbell Sabers on Tuesday night in a 10-5 win over Pearl City. It marked the first start together at the high school level for Elisa, an ace pitcher and cleanup hitter, and left fielder Trinity. “We haven’t really played together in a game since we were younger,” Trinity said. “It was a great feeling.” Elisa Favela […]

Q & A: Pearl City coach Gavin Concepcion

By Paul Honda on March 16, 2016

There’s a snappy saying out there: “To win the game, you’ve got to be in the game.” For Gavin Concepcion and his Pearl City baseball team, winning has become the norm. Perfection? They’re 4-0 in the rough OIA West after defeating Waianae 4-1, defending state champion Campbell 4-2, winning on the road at Mililani 7-0 and edging Aiea 9-8. Pearl City has gone from unranked (Week 1) to No. 7 (Week 2) to No. 2 in the Star-Advertiser Baseball Top […]
