Pearl City could be close to breakthrough

By Nick Abramo on April 5, 2016

Pearl City is right in the middle of the pack of Oahu Interscholastic Association West softball. At 4-4, the Chargers have four convincing wins over the bottom feeders and four losses to the contenders. Two of those four losses were by scores of 5-3 against Kapolei and 2-1 against Mililani. Both of those opponents are ranked in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10. The game against the Trojans last week was oh-so-close. Pearl City pitcher Tyanna Kaaialii had a no-hitter going […]

Kamehameha takes KS Cup

By Jerry Campany on April 2, 2016

The Kamehameha boys volleyball team has been up and down all season. Saturday certainly counts as a good day. The Warriors beat Hawaii Baptist 25-19, 27-25 to capture the KS Cup in their own gym, beating a stacked field that included KS-Hawaii and three California schools. George Kailiwai’s kill put the Warriors at match point at 24-22 in Set 2. HBA rallied to tie it at 24 after Miller’s kill and Kellen Takatsuka’s third ace of the match. Nicolas Caballes’ […]

Rough night for some ILH judoka

By Paul Honda on April 2, 2016

Mat 1 was a rough place to be in Mills Gymnasium on Friday night. Most of the night’s ILH judo matches proceeded without more or less than the usual fanfare (like a bloody nose). ‘Iolani’s defending state champion, Dane Yamashiro, breezed through with three wins, completely unchallenged. Kamehameha’s formidable Jaclyn Fontanilla was absent due to illness. But on Mat 1, a Kamehameha player got thrown headfirst, his face bouncing off the surface before he wound up almost motionless on his […]

Martinez riding the football development bus

By Nick Abramo on April 1, 2016

Former Moanalua football head coach Arnold Martinez has been keeping busy in the sport, even though he does not have a job in the coaching ranks right now. The Moanalua teacher last coached Na Menehune in 2013, but he’s been elsewhere sponging up football coaching knowledge, aside from broadcasting Hawaii high school games on the radio. Over the past two years, Martinez spent time training at the following places: >> 2014: Seattle Seahawks training camp >> 2014: Clemson University football […]

Defense took center stage in this ILH skirmish

By Nick Abramo on March 31, 2016

Defense can be underrated, especially in this fantasy sports fueled world where a home run means a lot but a run-saving defensive play means nothing. I say give 100 points (or whatever else it should be worth) to the field gem. Mid-Pacific’s 4-1, nine-inning Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball victory over Saint Louis on Wednesday at Goeas Field had more than its share of tremendous defensive plays. The Crusaders (7-4) tied it at 1-all in the bottom of the seventh […]

Taguchi steps down as Kalani football coach

By Hawaii Prep World on March 31, 2016

Greg Taguchi has stepped down as head football coach at Kalani. The full story from Paul Honda is in Friday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Taguchi, 47, who was the head baseball coach for four seasons for the Falcons in the 1990s, had three different stints as the varsity football coach totaling 15 seasons. He led Kalani to its first winning season in 41 years in 2013, when the Falcons played in their first OIA playoff game. Kalani appeared in the playoffs again […]

Campbell sports another fine softball lineup

By Nick Abramo on March 30, 2016

Campbell has been a unanimous No. 1 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 since the season began, and with good reason. Four first-team All-State players and one second-teamer are among the starters on this year’s club, which is off to a 6-0 start in the Oahu Interscholastic Association West and on a mission to repeat as the Division I state champion. Senior Elisa Favela, the reigning All-State player of the year who hits for both power and average and is […]

Hawaii vs. Calif. at Kapalama Cup

By Jerry Campany on March 29, 2016

Three of Hawaii’s best teams will face off with three California powers in this week’s Kapalama Cup on the Kamehameha campus. The host Warriors share a pool with Fountain Valley and Santa Barbara. Kamehameha-Hawaii and Hawaii Baptist are in the other pool with Edison of Huntington Beach, Calif. The tournament begins on Thursday with Fountain Valley playing Santa Barbara at 5 p.m. and Edison meeting Hawaii Baptist on the other court. The Eagles play Kamehameha-Hawaii after that with KSH and […]
