Dunn & Fun: Owls returning to states

By Paul Honda on April 8, 2016

The Mid-Pacific Owls are back in the state tourney, and Owl Nation is breathing a collective sigh of relief. “I’m happy we made it back,” senior pitcher/designated hitter Chase Wago said following a 9-1 win over Kamehameha on Thursday that clinched the regular-season title — and automatic state berth. “At the beginning of the year, we had a hard time. We pulled together as a team.” Week 1 was glum for the Owls. They pulled out a nine-inning, 3-2 win […]

Warriors hoping to regain momentum

By Paul Honda on April 8, 2016

It was a helpless feeling for any coach, and Tommy Perkins is a baseball coach in his blood. The longtime Kamehameha coach, who spent 18 seasons as an intermediate coach, wasn’t able to be at Goeas Field for the start of the Warriors’ varsity game against first-place Mid-Pacific on Thursday afternoon. Jury duty beckoned, and he simply didn’t have enough justification to leave early. It probably wouldn’t have mattered a whole lot against a top-ranked Owls team that jumped to […]

Hilo hires Drummondo as football head coach

By Nick Abramo on April 7, 2016

Hilo didn’t have to look very far for a new head football coach. He was right there all along. The Vikings hired Kaeo Drummondo as the head man, athletic director Kurt Kawachi told Hawaii Prep World on Thursday. Drummondo spent last season with Lisa Pana as co-head coaches and led Hilo to its third straight Big Island Interscholastic Federation championship and a spot in the Division I state tournament. Previously, Drummondo, who is a Big Island police officer, was an […]

Mid-Pacific hires Kagawa as soccer coach

By Nick Abramo on April 6, 2016

Kurt Kagawa is the new head coach for the Mid-Pacific boys soccer team, Owls athletic director Scott Wagner announced Wednesday. Kagawa is a former Mid-Pacific intermediate team coach and assistant for the Owls varsity. He has also been a coach for the Bulls soccer club and an assistant with the Mililani varsity team the past two seasons. Kagawa takes over for Jayson Abe, who stepped down recently to take the head men’s coaching position at Chaminade. Abe led the Owls […]

The difference between 9-4 and 2-12

By Paul Honda on April 6, 2016

Of all the key elements that separate title contenders from competitive, yet lower-tier teams in the merciless Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball kingdom, clutching up at the plate is certainly one. There’s more to it, naturally, than stranding 11 baserunners and batting 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. But, as Maryknoll coach Randy Yamashiro said after a 6-1 loss to No. 3 Saint Louis on Tuesday, it’s been a struggle. Coming through with two-out base hits has not been easy […]

Kamehameha’s Alo ranked second before trials

By Jerry Campany on April 5, 2016

USA Wrestling released its rankings for the upcoming Olympic Trials in wrestling, and Four-time state champion Teshya Alo of Kamehameha is seeded second. The trials will be held April 9-10 in Iowa City. Although Alo is already a member of the U.S. National Team, a victory in the tournament would put her one step closer to her dream of wrestling in the Olympics in Brazil this summer. Alo, 18, was targeting 2020 for her Olympic dream but is way ahead […]
