Damien vs. Pac-Five 3OT game was a real gem

By Nick Abramo on October 1, 2016

Triple overtime games with dramatic endings don’t come around too often, so Hawaii fans lucky enough to be at Aloha Stadium for Damien’s 50-49 victory over Pac-Five on Friday night can savor that experience. It was a classic case of two longtime rivals going at it hard. The Monarchs had the early momentum and, with Pac-Five’s slow start, it appeared like Damien might win going away. But, when Wolfpack quarterback Ryan Johnson finally settled into his groove, back they came. […]

Kahuku’s Fisiiahi forced to move on

By Billy Hull on October 1, 2016

If Kahuku senior Vili Fisiiahi was trying to keep his return to Kaiser to himself, his coaching staff wasn’t having any of it. “We kind of rubbed it in during the week that we’re going back to Vili’s house,” Red Raiders coach Vavae Tata said. Fisiiahi was part of that 2014 Kaiser team that handed Kahuku its last loss in the OIA regular season. It was a different story on Friday night as No. 1 Kahuku coasted to a 56-6 […]

Campbell’s Ramos a force in multiple sports

By Christian Shimabuku on October 1, 2016

On the football field, Markus Ramos certainly looked the part on Friday night. The Campbell senior leveraged his 6-foot-3 frame to haul in three touchdowns and used his long strides to separate from defenders. Despite this, football is not his sport. He has a promising baseball career and is committed to pitch for the University of Oregon, where he said the school will cover “about 92 percent” of his costs. “I wish I could play more because nothing beats playing […]

Versatile Leilehua QBs share the load

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 1, 2016

Leilehua coach Nolan Tokuda said the Mules had two starting quarterbacks prior to their matchup with Mililani. Sure enough, Kona Andres and Kaleo Aloha Piceno — Nos. 1 and 2 on the Leilehua roster — lined up side-by-side in the Leilehua backfield on the Mules’ first play from scrimmage on Friday. Andres ended up taking the first two snaps but alternated with Piceno in a 13-play opening drive. Andres went on to handle the bulk of the passing duties while throwing […]

Valladares provides spark for Trojans

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 1, 2016

Andrew Valladares didn’t contribute directly to the highest point total in the 38-game history of the Mililani-Leilehua rivalry. But big plays by the senior slot receiver helped ignite five of Mililani’s eight scoring drives in the Trojans’ 52-35 shootout win to close the regular season Friday night in Wahiawa. A 59-yard punt return set up Mililani’s first touchdown, two third-down receptions covering 31 and 30 yards in the fourth quarter led to scores and the Trojans (5-2 OIA Red) held […]

Mililani and Campbell earn state tourney berths

By Nick Abramo on October 1, 2016

With wins on Friday night, Mililani and Campbell punched their tickets into the state tournament. Mililani defeated Leilehua 52-35 to clinch a Division I first-round bye in the upcoming Oahu Interscholastic Association Red playoffs as the division’s No. 2 seed. Campbell rolled to a 52-7 victory over Radford to sew up a first-round bye in the OIA Blue playoffs as that division’s No. 2 seed. All four teams who have earned OIA byes — Blue champion Kahuku, Red champion Kapolei, Mililani […]
