Bulldog breakthrough

By Brian McInnis on October 22, 2016

The Waialua Bulldogs looked right at home at the farthest possible football field on Oahu. The cheers from their dozens of red-and-white-clad faithful echoed out across Kaiser Stadium as quarterback Tevesi Toia took a knee behind victory formation and the seconds ticked down on a 19-14 win over Kaimuki in the OIA Division II semifinals on Friday night. Waialua had punched its first HHSAA state tournament berth at long last. Longtime coach Lincoln Barit soaked it in quietly on the […]

New faces in Division II volleyball tourney

By Jerry Campany on October 22, 2016

The HHSAA’s Divison II volleyball tournament was instituted in part to give schools a shot at postseason glory that would never have the chance otherwise. Ask around the communities of Waianae, Kohala and Molokai and they will say ‘mission accomplished’ Division II stalwarts Hawaii Prep (11 straight years in the tournament), Konawaena (6), top seed Hawaii Baptist (5) and MIL champion Hana (5) are in there as usual, but they might see a different landscape when the semifinals move to […]

Moanalua gets tough draw in HHSAA

By Jerry Campany on October 22, 2016

Moanalua seems to have lost its most favored nation status with the HHSAA Na Menehune made the tournament for the 15th straight year, but will have to travel to Iolani to advance to the quarterfinals. Moanalua has had the benefit of a home match until the semifinals for the past two years. For a school that has been kicked out of the tournament by an ILH team the past five years, that is not exactly optimal. Moanalua has had the […]

Crusaders get it done for coach Cal

By Billy Hull on October 22, 2016

Hawaii’s winningest high school football coach celebrated another ILH championship at Aloha Stadium as his Crusaders stepped up defensively to force six turnovers in a 28-14 win over No. 2 Punahou. Lee had missed the last two games dealing with a bout of kidney stones. He is scheduled to undergo surgery next week, but toughed it out on the Saint Louis sideline on Friday night. Watching his defense […]

Leilehua’s Watson to have season-ending surgery

By Paul Honda on October 22, 2016

The Leilehua Mules can rock and roll with some of the most explosive foes in the state. That much is true, even on a night when the mighty Mules had to begin life without one of the top two-way performers in the islands. Charles Moku Watson, their standout defensive back/wide receiver, didn’t dress for the game against No. 7 Mililani on Friday. Watson, who recently decommitted from Washington State, will undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum on Tuesday according […]

Waipahu’s late whirlwind finishes Pearl City

By Nick Abramo on October 22, 2016

Some day in the distant future when Waipahu players reminisce about this playoff win, they’ll recall the late flurry that got the deed done. This 13-7 victory over Pearl City on Friday night was by no means easy. The two teams traded mostly defensive blows all night — and it had the feel that it was going to overtime with a 7-all stalemate. But then things began to change. It was two defensive plays that got the ball rolling in Waipahu’s […]
