The HHSAA’s Divison II volleyball tournament was instituted in part to give schools a shot at postseason glory that would never have the chance otherwise.

Ask around the communities of Waianae, Kohala and Molokai and they will say ‘mission accomplished’

Division II stalwarts Hawaii Prep (11 straight years in the tournament), Konawaena (6), top seed Hawaii Baptist (5) and MIL champion Hana (5) are in there as usual, but they might see a different landscape when the semifinals move to Kaimuki on Friday.

Kohala is making the trip to the state tournament for the first time since 1999, where they will meet Molokai in a first round game at Kaimuki on Wednesday. Their opponent? Molokai, which hasn’t participated since 2011.

OIA champion Waianae has a reason to visit Honolulu for the first time since 2006, waiting until Thursday to play either Kapaa or Hawaii Prep at Kaimuki. Other schools back in the tournament after an absence are Roosevelt (2013) and Honokaa (2014). Damien, Le Jardin and Kapaa are all in the tournament for the second straight year.
