By Hawaii Prep World on November 14, 2016

Six teams are left standing as we draw to a close of the 2016 high school football season with three state championship games this weekend at Aloha Stadium. Most people expected a rematch in the Open Division final between Saint Louis and Kahuku and we’ll get exactly that on Saturday night at 7. An impressive 54-7 win over Kapolei in the semifinals of the Open Division in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships has vaulted Kahuku into the top 20 in the nation in the latest USA Today Super 25 rankings. The Red Raiders (11-1) jumped up three spots to No. 19 in the rankings released on Monday morning. Only three teams in the entire country that have lost a game are ranked ahead of Kahuku, which suffered its only defeat at […]

Texeira soldiered on despite horrifying loose ball

By Nick Abramo on November 13, 2016

Kapaa’s Kapena Texeira is a solider, according to Warriors football coach Philip Rapozo. So, when the Division II state football semifinal game was on the line Saturday, Texeira found himself with the ball four out of six plays on his team’s final possession. It was time to save the game, or as soldiers do, save whatever they can in the heat of battle. Rise above the fray, they say. All the Warriors (8-1) needed was to keep getting first downs […]

By Paul Honda on November 13, 2016

Much was on the line for second-seeded Konawaena: an opportunity to advance into the championship game of the Division II First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships. But a sloppy first half led to missed opportunities, and the visiting Lahainaluna Lunas pulled away after a 7-all halftime stalemate for a 28-14 victory at Julian Yates Field.

The second takes place on the Big Island as BIIF champion Konawaena hosts MIL champion Lahainauna, which smoked Waipahu 52-14 last week at War Memorial Stadium. Live updates of the 7 p.m. kickoff will follow […]

By Hawaii Prep World on November 12, 2016

The semifinals in the Open Division and Division I of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships on Friday night had little drama. All four games were decided by 16 points. Saturday it’s Division II’s turn to possibly generate some excitement with two semifinal games. The first takes place at Vidinha Stadium as KIF champion Kapaa hosts ILH champion Damien. Kapaa is attempting to reach the Division II state final for the second straight year while Damien hasn’t gotten there […]

Raiders dumped Sabers with finesse, ruggedness

By Nick Abramo on November 12, 2016

Campbell is known as a rugged football team, but the Sabers got beat in the sturdiness department by ‘Iolani on Friday night. As a result, Campbell (7-5) is done for the season, having been vanquished by the Raiders 35-12 in the state Division I semifinals in Mililani. Sure, the Raiders (5-7) had plenty of their usual finesse, but in the trenches and in the tackling and blocking parts of the game, they stood toe to toe with the bigger opponents […]

Crusaders’ defense could close the deal

By Paul Honda on November 12, 2016

Offense has taken Saint Louis quite far. Defense by the gentlemen of Kalaepohaku could close the deal. Clearly, and abundantly, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and the offensive unit have provided ample push toward that beautiful koa trophy waiting to be taken home by this year’s state football champion. But right now, getting out of the semifinal round of the all-new, old-school-tenacious Open Division of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Championships isn’t about aerial delights alone. It takes sound defense. Consistent, physical, […]
