By Billy Hull on January 11, 2017

The inaugural Polynesian Bowl, scheduled for a week from Saturday at Aloha Stadium, has finalized its roster with 37 from Hawaii scheduled to participate in the game. Punahou linebacker Seyddrick Lakalaka, who missed the majority of his senior season with an injury, and defensive back Ryan Dominick join Leilehua receiver Kawai Phifer as the final additions to the game from Hawaii. Kickoff is 6 p.m. on Jan. 21 and the game will be televised on ESPN3. The teams will be […]

Kamehameha’s Pauole gets Mountain West offer

By Billy Hull on January 11, 2017

The service academies have some company in recruiting Kamehameha senior defensive tackle Nakoa Pauole. Fresno State, which has been busy in the islands this week offering Saint Louis DL Faatui Tuitele and Kahuku DE Samson Reed, have extended an offer to the 6-foot-2, 270-pound Pauole. Pauole announced the offer on Twitter. Ua ha‘aha‘a a pōmaika‘i ‘ia ko‘u na‘au no kēia noi komo maiā Fresno State! Saint Louis’ Tuitele adds Oregon offer

By Billy Hull on January 11, 2017

Saint Louis defensive tackle Faatui Tuitele has established himself as the No. 1 prospect out of Hawaii for the class of 2019. He’s also become one of the top prospects in the entire nation. Still just a sophomore, the 6-foot-3, 270-pound Tuitele has put together quite the recruiting resume with Oregon the latest to offer. Tuitele made the announcement on Twitter. BLESSED to have received my 8th offer from the University of Oregon pic.twitter.com/uosqkdIYAO — Faatui Tuitele (@tuitele87) January 11, […]

Lady Spartans rule the throne — for now

By Paul Honda on January 11, 2017

The Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 came out Monday, always another opportunity to examine and nit-pick over something that has absolutely no bearing on anything substantial. Anything close? No, just a couple of arguments: Konawaena should not move up ahead of ‘Iolani and Kamehameha by default, and why I still have Kamehameha-Maui on my ballot. Here’s how coaches and media voted. Star-Advertiser Top 10 Jan. 9, 2016 1. Maryknoll (11) 110 2. Konawaena 97 3. Lahainaluna 82 4. ‘Iolani 76 […]

HAWAII GROWN: Molina collects national honor

By Paul Honda on January 11, 2017

In addition to a second Pac-12 Conference freshman of the week honor in as many weeks, former Konawaena Wildcat Chanelle Molina was named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) freshman of the week today. Molina was already making headlines with a huge 33-point, five-rebound, seven-assist performance in Washington State’s 82-73 upset of then-No. 9 UCLA on Friday. Against USC on Sunday, the three-time Star-Advertiser all-state player of the year scored 16 points to lead the Cougars in a 74-57 win. […]

Baldwin’s Arcano leads juniors at Waialae

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 10, 2017

A Hawaii junior golfer himself a few — OK, maybe more than a few — years back, Parker McLachlin could offer some advice to the high school players working out some nerves in Tuesday’s Hawaii Tourism Authority Pro-Junior Challenge at Waialae Country Club. “He was just telling us to breathe,” Baldwin senior Justin Arcano said. “Take a big deep breath.” Arcano appeared comfortable in the three-hole exhibition that paired five local juniors with five pros entered in the Sony Open in […]

Voters forgetting Kailua’s accomplishments

By Paul Honda on January 10, 2017

Here’s Monday’s Star-Advertiser boys basketball top 10, followed by my ballot. I’m not sold on the very young Leilehua Mules yet, and Kailua is vastly underrated here. The same team that beat then-No. 1 ‘Iolani and two mainland teams in the ‘Iolani Classic was mercilessly pulverized by voters because of last week’s loss to Kahuku. Where’s the balance and perspective, panelists? Classic example of recency bias, a term I don’t like, but fits. As for Lahainaluna, it’s not easy to […]

Campbell’s Tynanes overcomes knee injury

By Christian Shimabuku on January 10, 2017

Campbell senior Micah Tynanes, who was the prep feature in today’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser, is hoping for his second straight sweep of the OIA and state wrestling titles next month. He won both in the 195-pound weight class last year and will most likely compete at 220 this year in order for Campbell to have a complete lineup. However, a 25-pound jump in weight class won’t be his toughest obstacle on the road to a repeat. As a defensive lineman on […]
