FAU makes it five offers for Taulia Tagovailoa

By Paul Honda on January 19, 2017

It’s becoming a bit of a pipeline, this Hawaii-quarterbacks-to-the-Sunshine-State thing. Florida Atlantic became the latest university to become entranced with Kapolei quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, offering him a scholarship on Thursday. The connection to FAU is new head coach Lane Kiffin, who was Alabama’s offensive coordinator. Alabama was the first to offer a scholarship to Tagovailoa, a sophomore, during his freshman year. That offer was on the heels of an offer to Tagovailoa’s older brother, Tua, who is currently enrolled at […]

Beyond golden: Kaimuki’s Fa‘asoa and her legacy

By Paul Honda on January 19, 2017

Senior Night at Kaimuki was about to begin, moments after a 58-42 win over Kalani sealed first place in the OIA East for the Bulldogs girls basketball team. There it was, framed, a certificate of recognition from the State Legislature. Kaimuki coach Mona Fa‘asoa, the honoree. There was more. Another certificate, this one in a big envelope, commemorating recognition from Gov. David Ige. Fa‘asoa, the demanding, intense guru, began to melt. Every 10 seconds, she wiped more tears from her […]

Jim Harbaugh has some competition. After making headlines offering a quarterback from Hawaii before his freshman year, Harbaugh and his Michigan Wolverines finally have some competition in their pursuit of Kahuku quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava. Maiava tweeted that he has received a second scholarship offer on Wednesday — this one from Mountain West Conference member Fresno State. Latest shuffle vaults Kaimuki into Top 10

By Paul Honda on January 18, 2017

There’s no question that there is a surplus of quality teams in boys basketball, more than we see in girls hoops. And yet, that doesn’t diminish my interest in how many of the lower-enrollment, competitive programs are faring this season in girls basketball. KS-Maui continues to roll in the MIL against all teams not named Lahainaluna. Seabury Hall leads MIL D-II despite splitting with Molokai in a home-and-away two-day series — with the road team winning closely in each game. […]

Gomera-Stevens, Warriors begin stretch run

By Christian Shimabuku on January 17, 2017

The Kamehameha girls’ soccer team has a crucial week of action which will likely decide the ILH race. Led by senior Makamae Gomera-Stevens, who was featured in Tuesday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser, the Warriors are 8-1-1. They face Punahou (8-1-1) today and ‘Iolani (8-0-2) on Saturday to close out the regular season. Despite a 68-3 goal differential, the Buffanblu and Raiders are the only teams that the Warriors haven’t defeated this season. Punahou defeated Kamehameha, 2-1 on Dec. 17. Three days later, […]
